Uster International: Aschwin Wildeboer Threatens World Record in 100 Back -- February 1, 2009

USTER, Switzerland, February 1. ASCHWIN Wildeboer threatened his world record in the 100 back at the short course meter Uster International meet held in Switzerland.

Wildeboer touched out American Peter Marshall, 49.97 to 50.15, as the duo took a run at Wildeboer's global standard of 49.20 set in Madrid in December. Marshall's effort also scared his American record of 49.63 set in Berlin in November. Notably, Wildeboer would clock a 50 back leadoff of 23.18 in the men's 200 medley relay to end the night. That performance came up a bit short of Randall Bal's world record of 22.87 set at the same meet as Marshall's American standard in the 100.

The 100 back proved to be the highlight of the second night of swimming as Antje Buschschulte clocked a meet-record time of 59.27 to win among the women.

Meanwhile, Hinkelien Schreuder crushed the women's 50 free with a meet record of 23.99, just more than half-a-second off Marleen Veldhuis' world record of 23.25 set at the 2008 World Short Course Championships.

In the men's splash-and-dash, Rafael Munoz Perez touched out Fabien Gilot, 21.55 to 21.86, as both cleared the meet record. Notably, American Kicker Vencill placed fourth in 22.35.

Evelyn Verraszto claimed her third title of the meet to open the evening with a 1:57.55 in the women's 200 free, while Mads Glaesner hit the wall in 1:46.94 for the men's 200 free crown. Evelyn Verraszto then doubled for the day with her fourth title when she dominated the women's 400 IM with a meet-record 4:39.40. David Verraszto eclipsed the men's 400 IM meet record with a winning time of 4:09.05.

Julie Hjorth-Hansen stopped the clock in a meet-record 2:24.88 for the women's 200 breast victory, while David Verraszto snagged another title with a 2:11.61 to 2:12.47 defeat of Oleg Lisogor in the men's 200 breast.

Schreuder started her evening off right with a win in the women's 100 fly with a 58.33 before claiming the 50 free crown. Meanwhile, Munoz Perez earned another meet record with a time of 50.47 to win the men's 100 fly.
