CeraVe Invitational: Day Three Prelims -- January 11, 2009

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, January 11. THE final day of qualifying is in the bag at the CeraVe Invitational held on the campus of Rutgers University. The regional meet features some of the fastest swimmers in the area hosted by the Berkeley Aquatic Club.


Women's 1500 free slower seeds
Megan Northshield of the Delaware Swim Team set the time to beat during the early heats of the metric mile with a time of 17:52.43. Julia Festa (18:01.92), Sarah Schlichte (18:08.05) and Cody Zawatson (18:11.73) of the Long Island Aquatic Club also clocked the second, third and fourth-fastest times in the early heats.

Men's 1500 free slower seeds
The time to beat for this evening is 16:26.52 courtesy of Sean Minderlein of the Delaware Swim Team. Badger's Kevin Hughes clocked the second-best time in the earlier heats with a 16:51.43, while Long Island Aquatic Club's Michael Lennon posted a time of 16:58.90 during afternoon swimming.

Women's 200 breast
The top seed for tonight's A final is 14-year-old Annie Zhu of the Agua Swim Team. During the morning, Zhu swam a World Championship Trials qualifying time of 2:35.88. 14-year-old Kristine Ng of the Scarlet Aquatic Club, who swam a time of 2:44.78, will also compete in the A final. Ji Young Lee (2:44.87) of the Peddie Aquatic Association also qualified.

Coray O'Halloran (2:45.39) and Meaghan Fenn (2:45.59) of the Badger Swim Club, Emma Jackson (2:47.12) of the Bluefish Swim Club, Alexandra Gorki (2:47.65) of the Westchester Marlins and Madeline Maher (2:48.28) of the Germantown Academy Aquatic Club finish off the A final field.

Gabby Borutecene (2:48.75) of the Long Island Aquatic Club achieved a Sectional time during prelims and is the top contender in the B final tonight. Also swimming in tonight's final will be Rebecca Lewinson (2:49.50) of X-Cel Swimming, Kaia Simmons (2:50.83) of Bluefish Swim Club, Katie Steeves (2:51.81) of the Deleware Swim Team, Rebecca Malone (2:51.82) of the Peddie Aquatic Association, Emily Bart (2:52.29) and Jessica Simunek (2:52.57) of the Jersey Wahoos Swim Club as well as Bernadette D'Alonzo (2:53.10) of the Scarlet Aquatic Club.

Leading off tonight's C final will be Ellesse Lunde, followed by Anna Marshall, Brenna Stewart, Emma Carpenter, Erin Thomson, Katie Radin, Melissa Lang and Joanna Wycech.

Men's 200 breast
Less than a second separates the top two seeds heading into tonight. Nimrod Hayet of the Peddie Aquatic Association posted a 2:26.65, touching just ahead Suburban Swim Center's Robert Power, who swam a time of 2:27.49. Both Hayet and Power swam Junior cuts this morning, and tonight should be an extremely close race for first.

Eric Materniak (2:32.45) of the Delaware Swim Team, and Mike McVicker (2:32.76) of the Badger Swim Club both swam Sectional times this morning.

Matthew Karle (2:33.05) of the Westchester Marlins, Connor Signorin (2:33.55) of the Peddie Aquatic Association, Andrew Reimon (2:35.84) of the Cougar Aquatic Team, and Lucas Zelehowsky (2:35.96) of the Lansing Cats round out the A final field.

Chris Cipolla (2:36.36) of the Scarlet Aquatic Club, Nicolas Fink (2:37.44) of the Cougar Aquatic Team, Edwin Angjeli (2:37.62) of the Bay and Ocean State Squids, Sean Sullivan (2:37.71) of the Long Island Aquatic Club, Daniel Fine (2:38.47) of the Peddie Aquatic Association, Paolo Deluca (2:38.62) of the Bluefish Swim Club, Ben Itzkowitz (2:38.81) of the Badger Swim Club and Seiji Gromme (2:42.87) of the Cayman Islands comprise the B final.

Aleksandr Galinskiy will lead off the C final, accompanied by Alec Szlachta-McGinn, Mike Leddy, Johnny Carroll, Jonathan Bender, Mark Hansen, Andrew English and Nathan Pursley.

Women's 200 back
The top three seeds for tonight finished within half a second of each other. Kaitlyn Jones of the Delaware Swim Team who is 14 years old, swam a time of 2:22.50 for the top seed. Touching right behind were Lili Shiota of the Agua Swim Team in 2:22.69, and Anna Senko of the Bluefish Swim Club in 2:22.97. Tonight's final race will surely be a close one.

Kim Holden (2:23.98) of the Westchester Marlins, Cara Vogel (2:24.88) of the Bluefish Swim Club and Alex Forrester (2:24.96) also of the Bluefish Swim Club touched fourth through sixth, respectively.

Meaghan Fenn (2:26.23) of the Badger Swim Club and Katherine Ashenfelter (2:26.31) of the Bluefish Swim Club also earned transfer spots.

Katie Radin (2:27.39) of the Bluefish Swim Club earned the top seed for the B final. The rest of the heat proved to be tightly contested with Annie Zhu (2:27.77) of the Agua Swim Team, Maureen McCotter (2:28.70) of the Jersey Wahoos Swim Club and Rachel Flinn (2:28.87) of the Peddie Aquatic Association also making B finals.

Kristiana Kalibat (2:29.00) of Eastern Express, Lauren Ross (2:29.37) of the Berkeley Aquatic Club, Grace Senko (2:29.53) of the Bluefish Swim Club and Daniela Rueda (2:29.72) of the Agua Swim Team completed the B final field.

Katie Hughes, Rebecca Sharpe, Victoria Cassidy, Melinda Yau, Micah Sims, Rachel Kessler, Courtney Ciardiello and Shannon Bender will swim in the C final.

Men's 200 back
Ian Clark of the Suburban Swim Center ran away with the top seed this morning when he clocked a 2:06.88.

Jack Wagner (2:10.28) and Nick Spinella (2:11.11) of the Long Island Aquatic Club, Matthew Belecanech (2:11.22) of the Jersey Wahoos Swim Club, Jeffrey Gomez (2:11.53) of the Cougar Aquatic Team and Pat Meyers (2:12.28) of the Bluefish Swim Club followed Clark.

Connor Signorin (2:12.71) of the Peddie Aquatic Association and Pat O'Donovan (2:13.49) of the Lansing Cats will also vie for the event title in the A final.

Quinn Barlett (2:14.56) of the Suburban Swim Center snagged the top seed for the B final.

Other swimmers of the B final include Clifton Gordon (2:16.78) of the Delaware Swim Team, Chris Lyons (2:16.93) and Mike McVicker (2:16.95) of the Badger Swim Club, Michael Abrams (2:17.07) of the Agua Swim Team, Patrick Sullivan (2:17.20) of the Bluefish Swim Club and Kevin Hughes (2:17.78) of the Badger Swim Club.

The final transfer spot will be left to a swimoff or scratch to decide as Paul Nolle of Berkeley Aquatic Club and Nick Charriez of the Westchester Marlins tied for 16th out of prelims with matching 2:18.14s.

The C final will consist of Peter Ko, Jorge Fortin, Brendan Walsh, Dylan McDermott, Kevin Wang, Sam Gyory and Matthew Heise.

Women's 100 free
15-year-old Megan Lydzinski (58.97) of X-Cel Swimming, Alex Forrester (59.02) of Bluefish Swim Club, and Peddie Aquatic Association's 15-year-old Carolyn Fittin (59.11) set up a barnburner for the title this evening with close preliminary times.

Others who placed in the top eight included Alex Frasier (59.71) of Bluefish Swim Club, Peddie Aquatic Association's Laura Loughran (1:00.23) and Ji Young Lee (1:01.39), Kate Toth (1:00.51) of Berkeley Aquatic Club, and Lauren Morford (1:01.43) from Agua Swim Team.

B finalists include Julia Festa (1:01.45) of Long Island Aquatic Club, 15-year-old Taylor Scilufo (1:01.49) of Badger Swim Club, Sarah Aemisegger (1:01.70) of the Germantown Academy Aquatic Club, Micah Sims (1:01.85) of the Westchester Marlins, 15-year-old Jillian Liwacz (1:01.90) of Peddie Aquatic Association and A.J. Van Nispen (1:02.03) and Rebecca Delafuente (1:02.10) of Berkeley Aquatic Club.

Betsy Weston, Suzi Stein, 15-year-old Emily Tan, Megan Northshield, Xiao Zhao, Lauren Ross, 15-year-old Kelly Johanson, and Lili Shiota qualified for the C finals.

Men's 100 free
Tonight should be close as first seed Louis Arruda (53.16) of Bluefish Swim Club and Long Island Aquatic Club's Jack Wagner (53.43) finished within half a second of each other. Pete Fittin (54.94) of Peddie Aquatic Association finished third. The other contenders tonight are Jorge Fortin (55.17) of Bay and Ocean State Squids, T.J. McCarthy (55.60) of Peddie Aquatic Association, and Suburban Swim Center's Robert Power (55.68). Bluefish Swim Club's Jeffrey Thomas and Matthew Belecanech of New Jersey Wave also tied this morning with a matching 55.58s.

Bluefish Swim Club has three lanes in tonight's B finale with John Vatkevich (56.14), Pat Myers (56.33), and Timmy O'Neill (56.24) each earning a spot. Nicholas Cerra (55.96) and Nick Spinella (56.43) of Long Island Aquatic Club, Edwin Angjeli (56.26) from Bay and Ocean State Squids, Pat O'Donovan (56.36) of the Lansing Cats and Chris DeLafuente (56.64) of Berkeley Aquatic Club will join them.

Aleksandr Galinskiy, Ricky Martin, Ben Itzkowitz, Patrick Olson, Derek Hursch, Nicolas Fink, Matthew Hadley and Luca Spinazzola earned spots in tonight's C final.

Women's 200 fly
Isla Hutchinson-Maddox (2:19.21), 13, placed first this morning with a Junior Nationals cut. Racing next to her will be Kaia Simmons (2:19.83) and Alex Forrester (2:19.87), of the Bluefish Swim Club. Bridget Casey (2:20.86) of Germantown Academy Aquatic Club, Ali Polhill (2:21.88) and Sammie Cooper (2:22.22) of Westchester Marlins, Rachel Kessler (2:22.08) of Badger Swim Club and Megan Northshield (2:25.39) of Delaware Swim Team also made the top eight.

Annie McCotter (2:26.08) and Maureen McCotter (2:28.45) of Jersey Wahoos Swim Club, Perry Ashenfelter (2:26.35) of Bluefish Swim Club, Annie Zhu (2:27.34) of Aqua Swim Team, Meaghan Fenn (2:28.03) of Badger Swim Club, Alisha Cervone (2:28.66) of New Jersey Wave, Ashley Smith (2:29.14) of Long Island Aquatic Club and Stephanie Koziol (2:29.15) of Berkeley Aquatic Club also earned spots into the consolation final.

The bonus consolation will be dominated by young swimmers, including 15-year-olds Lauren Buckworth, Taylor Scilufo and Madeline Maher, and 14-year-olds Jade Hursch and Kaitlyn Jones. Kim Holden, Lauren Morford and Erin Henn are also expected to compete.

Men's 200 fly
Pat Myers (2:11.48) of Bluefish Swim Club touched out Wesley Mullins (2:11.52) from Peddie Aquatic Association for tonight's top seed. Long Island Aquatic Club's Nicholas Cerra followed closely behind in 2:11.96.

Also expected to swim in the A heat tonight are Nimrod Hayet (2:12.94) and Connor Signorin (2:13.87) of Peddie Aquatic Association, Matthew Kietlinski (2:13.03) of Eastern Express, 15-year-old Joshua King (2:13.59) of Berkeley Aquatic Club and Lucas Zelehowsky (2:14.32) of the Lansing Cats.

Eric Materniak (2:14.41) and Clifton Gordon (2:17.88) of Delaware Swim Team, 15-year-old Matthew Karle (2:14.84) of Westchester Marlins, Sean Mackenzie (2:15.19) and Paul Schafer (2:16.15) of Eastern Express, 15-year-old Sean Sullivan (2:15.51) of Long Island Aquatic Club, Joe Conti (2:15.97) of New Jersey Wave and Edwin Angjeli (2:18.01) of Bay and Ocean State Squids will compete in tonight's B heat.

The C finale will include Thomas Glenn, Jeffrey Thomas, Sean Minderlein, Matthew Belecanech, Mace Mulleady, John Vatkevich, Sam Petersen and Nick Charriez.
