PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, January 10. THE second day of prelims took place at the CeraVe Invitational on the campus of Rutgers University. The meet, hosted by the Berkeley Aquatic Club, featured some strong swims this morning.
Women's 400 IM
Annie Zhu, 14, (4:55.74) with Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics topped Saturday's preliminaries, giving her a World Championship Trials cut time. Nicole Vernon (5:01.20), 15, of Delaware Swim Team swam a Junior National cut time. They were followed by Kacie Ciampoli (5:08.82) of Germantown Academy Aquatic Club, Kaia Simmons (5:09.12) of Bluefish Swim Club, Victoria Cassidy (5:09.94) of Eastern Express, Lauren Ross (5:09.95) of Berkeley Aquatic Club, Badger Swim Club's Rachel Kessler, 14, (5:10.29) and Anna Senko (5:11.39) of Bluefish Swim Club.
Germantown Academy Aquatic Club's Bridget Casey made it to the B final with a time of 5:11.62. Katie Hughes (5:13.27), Megan Northshield (5:14.03), Emily Logan (5:15.23), Daniela Rueda, 15, (5:15.72), Rebecca Lewinson (5:16.78), Katie Steeves (5:16.81) and Stephanie Koziol, 15, (5:17.13) also will move onto the B final.
Madeline Maher, 15, will lead the way into the C final with a time of 5:17.60. Also going to the C final will be Courtney Ciardiello, 15, (5:17.62), Megan Zarriello (5:17.66), Lili Shiota (5:17.81), Katie Radin (5:17.87), Adrienne Groccia (5:18.32), Lauren Morford (5:19.47) and Lauren Buckworth (5:19.82).
Men's 400 IM
Connor Signorin (4:36.45), from Peddie Aquatic Association swam, a Junior National cut in Saturday's preliminary. Central Jersey Aquatic Club's Connor Jaeger (4:36.76) and Delaware Swim Team's Eric Materniak (4:37.40) finished nearby, both with Junior National cuts. Jack Wagner (4:40.11) from Long Island Aquatic Club, Robert Power (4:42.03) and Ian Clark (4:44.07) from Suburban Swim Center, 15-year-old Sean Sullivan (4:44.49), also from Long Island Aquatic Club, and Matthew Belecanech (4:46.01) from Jersey Wahoos Swim Club rounded out the top eight swimmers from the event preliminaries.
Long Island Swim Club's Nicholas Cerra (4:46.78) made the B finals in ninth place, followed by Nimrod Hayet (4:47.15). Trailing not far behind were Pat Myers (4:47.62), Mike McVicker (4:47.97), and Alex Gianino (4:48.93). Edwin Angjeli (4:50.09), Jonathan Derlath (4:51.29), and Sean Minderlein (4:51.88) each swam their way to a place in the B final as well.
Wesley Mullins (4:52.23), Lucas Zelehowsky (4:52.83), and Mike Leddy (4:52.97) led the way to the C final. Chris Cipolla (4:53.19), Cameron Rattray (4:53.85), and Sam Petersen (4:54.17) finished next. Both Matthew Karle (4:56.54) and Patrick Olson (4:56.71) also swam times to make the C final.
Women's 50 free
Alex Forrester (27.00) of Bluefish Swim Club topped the Saturday morning preliminaries. Megan Lydzinski, 15, (27.19) of X-Cel Swimming came in second, followed by Carolyn Fittin, 15, (27.41) of Peddie Aquatic Association. Alex Frasier (27.62) of the Bluefish Swim Club came in fourth, followed closely by Lili Shiota (27.74) of Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics and Kellie Lyver (28.11) of the Badger Swim Club. Julia Festa (28.29) of Long Island Aquatic Club, Lia Kunnapas (28.29) of the Cougar Aquatic Team, and Sarah Aemisegger (28.29) of Germantown Academy Aquatic Club tied for the final position in the top heat of finals, requiring a swim-off to determine who will swim in the top heat of finals. That swimoff will take place to begin the evening's competition
Bryeanne Ravattine (28.34) earned a spot in the B finals, followed by Kate Toth (28.42) and 15-year-old Jillian Liwacz (28.46). Close behind were Rebecca Malone (28.54) and A.J. Van Nispen (28.56). Ali Polhill (28.56) tied with Van Nispen with 14-year-old Hannah Briant (28.59) breathing down her neck.
Swimming in tonight's C finals will be Morgan Karetnick, 14, with a time of 28.62. Lauren Buckworth, 15, (28.67), Kelley Covey (28.82) and Swim With A Purpose's Arlene Douglas (28.83) also made C finals. Katie Morin, 15, and Lauren Morford tied with matching times of 28.85. Topping off the heat will be Emily Tan (28.88) and Kim Holden (28.89).
Notably, Swimming World student reporter Regan Fink took 25th in the morning with a time of 28.96 while representing Cougar Aquatics. Based on scratches, she moved up to 23rd seed and will compete in this evening's finals.
Men's 50 free
Louis Arruda, 25, of Bluefish Swim Club was the top seed with a time of 24.62. Pete Fitten of Peddie Aquatic Club came in second with a time of 24.75. T.J. McCarthy (24.76) of Peddie Aquatic Club, Jack Wagner (24.88) of Long Island Aquatic Club, Bluefish Aquatic Club's Timmy O'Neill (25.48), Long Island Aquatic Club's Nick Spinella (25.53), Nicolas Fink (25.62) of Cougar Aquatic Club and Pat O'Donovan (25.66) of Lansing Cats completed the top eight for the A final
Westchester Marlins' Matthew Hadley made it to the B final with a time of 25.90. Following him was Jeffrey Thomas and Christopher Fleming (both 25.98), Derek Hursch and Ben Itzkowitz (both 25.99), John Vatkevich (26.10), Christopher Anderson (26.14) and Brendan Walsh (26.16).
Badger's Alex Gianino earned a C final bid with a time of 26.18. Sam Gyory (26.20), Ricky Martin (26.30), Chris DeLafuente (26.36), Patrick Olson, 15, (26.38), One June Chang (26.39), and Jeffrey Gomez and Chris Lyons (both 26.41) will also move onto C final.
Women's 100 back
Kim Holden of the Westchester Marlins earned the top seed in prelims with a Junior National qualifying time of 1:05.55. Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics' Lili Shiota (1:06.11) took second, followed by Alex Forrester (1:06.43) of Bluefish Swim Club. Kaitlyn Jones, 14, (1:06.66) of the Delaware Swim Team came in fourth this morning, followed by Lia Kunnapas (1:06.92) of the Cougar Aquatic Team and Rachel Flinn (1:07.34) of the Peddie Aquatic Association. Anna Senko (1:07.97) and Cara Vogel (1:08.16), both from Bluefish Swim Club, secured the final two spots in tonight's top heat of finals.
Katherine Ashenfelter (1:08.27) will lead off the B heat tonight, followed closely by Katie Radin (1:08.38) and 14-year-old Annie Zhu (1:08.41). Katie Hughes (1:08.69), Ali Polhill (1:08.80), and 15-year-old Carolyn Fittin (1:09.21) earned spots in the heat. Rebecca Sharpe (1:09.37) and Victoria Cassidy (1:09.73) earned the final two positions in the heat.
Swimming tonight's C heat of finals will be Brynja Winnan (1:09.77), Andrea Coniglio (1:10.16), 15-year-old Madeline Maher (1:10.170, Lauren Ross (1:10.87), Daniela Rueda (1:11.00), Grace Senko (1:11.27), Shannon Bender (1:11.28), and 14-year-old Annie McCotter (1:11.30).
Men's 100 back
Suburban Swim Center's Ian Clark (59.69) finished first for the center lane in this evening's A final. Pat O'Donovan (59.77) from Lansing Cats, Matthew Belecanech (59.94) from Jersey Wahoos Swim Club, and Jack Wagner (59.95) from Long Island Swim Club, finished close behind with sub-minute qualifying readouts. Long Island Aquatic Club's Nick Spinella (1:00.76), Cougar Aquatic Team's Jeffrey Gomez (1:01.11), Westchester Marlin's Nick Charriez (1:01.78), and Bluefish Swim Club's Pat Meyers (1:01.80) completed the A final group.
Jorge Fortin (1:02.34), from Bay and Ocean State Squids, topped the group of B finalists, followed by Clifton Gordon (1:02.38), Rory Loughran (1:02.44), and Quinn Bartlett (1:02.45). Robert Power (1:02.63), Mike McVicker (1:03.23), Matthew Hadley (1:03.65), and Brendan Walsh (1:03.83) finished off the B finals qualifiers.
Chris Lyons (1:03.94), Kevin Hughes (1:04.02), and Peter Ko (1:04.03) lead tonight's C final contingent. Brandon Brown (1:04.08), Scott Groel (1:04.15), and Sam Gyory (1:04.18) finished next, followed by Paul Schafer (1:04.30), and Paul Nolle (1:04.47).
Women's 400 free
Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics' Lauren Morford topped the middle distance prelim with a time of 4:24.92. Teammate Annie Zhu, 14, (4:30.83) and Lauren Ross (4:31.19) of Berkeley Aquatic Club also made it to the A final. Germantown Academy Aquatic Club's Kacie Ciampoli (4:31.29) and Bridget Casey (4:31.46), Megan Zarriello (4:31.53) of Long Island Aquatic Club, Kaia Simmons (4:32.56) of Bluefish Swim Club, and Badger Swim Club's Kelly Johanson (4:32.75) will also compete for the title in the A final.
Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics' Daniela Rueda, 15, (4:33.38) will continue onto the B final after her swim Saturday morning. Laura Loughran (4:33.85), Meghan Baker (4:35.32), Alex Frasier (4:35.44), Kate Toth (4:35.65), Anna Senko (4:35.76), Megan Northshield (4:35.87) and Maureen McCotter (4:37.11) will comprise the rest of the B final.
Kathryn Raplee (4:38.24), Sarah Schlichte (4:38.88), Courtney Ciardiello (4:39.02), Victoria Cassidy (4:39.24), Nicole Vernon (4:39.41), Stephanie Koziol, 15, (4:39.77), Lauren Buckworth (4:40.14) and Rachel Kessler (4:40.84) all will continue onto the C final.
Men's 400 free
Matthew Belecanech of the Jersey Wahoos paced the action in the middle distance preliminary heats with a time of 4:09.88. Connor Jaeger (4:10.81) of Central Jersey Aquatics and Connor Signorin (4:10.86) of the Peddie Aquatic Association will bracket Belecanech this evening.
Graham Eve (4:12.07) of Bluefish, Sean Minderlein (4:12.44), Sam Petersen (4:13.43) of Berkeley Aquatics, Jonathan Derlath (4:13.56) of Long Island Aquatics and Jeffrey Thomas (4:13.80) of Bluefish will make up the rest of the top eight.
Pat Myers (4:15.25), Luca Spinazzola (4:19.12), Clifton Gordon (4:19.88), Paul Nolle (4:20.19), Wesley Mullins (4:20.38), Kevin Hughes (4:20.90), Nicholas Cerra (4:21.25) and Alex Gianino (4:21.27) grabbed the B final spots.
Meanwhile, Cameron Rattray (4:22.68), Edwin Angjeli (4:22.71), Sean Sullivan (4:22.91), Matthew Kietlinski (4:22.94), Ben Itzkowitz (4:22.97), Derek Hursch (4:23.88), Trevor Leland (4:24.00) and Owen Burns (4:24.32) picked up the C final transfer spots.
