Washington vs. Lindenwood

ST. LOUIS, Missouri, January 10. THE Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming teams returned from their Winter Break training trip to pick up a pair of wins over visiting Lindenwood University at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday night. The WU men's team defeated the Lions, 137-81, and the women's team picked up a 130-88 victory. It was the first competition for either team since the Wheaton Invitational on Dec. 6.

The Washington U. women's squad took first place in eight of the 11 swimming events and the men's team had a first-place finish seven of 11 events. WU swept a home meet against Lindenwood for the second season in a row.

Some of the fast men's times included a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle by freshman Chris Valach. Valach finished the distance freestyle event with a Washington University season-best time of 9:47.52. Junior Dan Arteaga swam to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.12, and sophomore Kartik Anjur won the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 48.77.

Freshman Karina Stridh eclipsed the NCAA ‘B' cut standard in the 100-yard freestyle. She won the event with a time of 53.10, which fell shy of her season-best, Washington University school record, NCAA automatic qualifying time of 51.19, a mark she set at the Wheaton Invitational in December.

Senior Kelly Kono also swam to a pair of fast times against Lindenwood on Friday night. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.34, and she took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.68.
