CeraVe Invitational: Day One Age Group -- January 9, 2009

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, January 9. THE age groupers took center stage during the first day at the CeraVe Invitational sponsored by Berkeley Aquatic Club and held on the campus of Rutgers University.


Girls 13-14 200 free
Erin McElfresh (2:10.91) of Lansing Cats won this afternoon with a time that was nearly a second faster than her seed time. Agua Swim Team's Isla Hutchinson-Maddox finished second with a Zone time of 2:11.68. Following behind her was Cady Zawatson (2:13.22) of Long Island Aquatic Club.

Boys 13-14 200 free
The top finisher this afternoon was Paul Soley of Berkeley Aquatic Club with a Zone time of 2:02.22, cutting a second off his seed time. Following Soley was Will Rappaport (2:07.17) of Badger Swim Club, who also swam a Zone time. His teammate, Charles Barry, received third place with a time of 2:08.64.

Girls 11-12 50 back
The winner this afternoon was Sara Nestrowitz from Ridgewood YMCA with a Zone time of 33.21. Finishing second with a Zone time was teammate Michelle Kim (33.87). Following Kim was Westfield Area YMCA's Allie McBrearty with a Zone time of 35.37.

Boys 11-12 50 back
Alex Smith from Westchester Marlins finished in first place with a Zone time of 32.70. Following Smith was John Om of Ridgewood YMCA (32.99), also with a Zone time. Elite Swim Club's Ryan Sebastian touched third with a time of 33.95.

Girls 10-U 50 free
The top finisher this afternoon was Kaitlin Stearns from Elite Swim Club, who dropped a half of a second from her seed time to clock a Zone time of 31.75. Following Stearns was Annmarie Picinich of Ridgewood YMCA with a Zone time of 31.85. Finishing third was Long Island Aquatic Club's Cathy Tan (32.41), also with a Zone time.

Boys 10-U 50 free
In a close race, Ryan Ding from Berkeley Aquatic Club won the title with a time of 32.14. Lansing Cats' Kevin Miller came in second place with a time of 32.36, edging out third-place finisher Dylan VanManen from Long Island who finished with a time of 32.65. Josh Parker (33.52) and Justin Torres (33.57) rounded out the top five.

Girls 13-14 100 back
Cori Michibata from X-Cel Swimming won a tight battle with a time of 1:11.23. Second-place finisher Katie Kurtz (1:11.48) of Jersey Wahoos and third-place finisher Nicole Rodriquez (1:11.58) of Asphalt Green finished just behind Michibata. Gabbie Toback (1:12.79) and Katie Duncalf (1:12.88) rounded out the top five.

Boys 13-14 100 back
A quartet of 13-year-olds finished in the top five of timed finals on Friday, with Charles Barry (1:05.95) of Badger Swim Club taking the victory by about a second and a half. Second-place finisher Daniel Mo (1:07.54) is also a member of Badger Swim Club. The only 14-year-old to finish in the top five was Charlie Carr of Westchester Marlins, who finished with a time of 1:07.90. Ethan Louie (1:08.39) and Joseph Petrone (1:08.91) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Girls 11-12 400 free
Michelle Kim of Ridgewood YMCA won the event impressively with a time of 4:45.24. Kim and Regan Kology from Elite Swim Club ran away from the pack as Kology finished second with a time of 4:47.74. Molly Treble from Long Island Aquatic Club was the clear-cut third-place finisher with a time of 4:53.18. Emma Sawkins (4:59.19) and Sara Nestrowitz (4:59.39) were also able to break five minutes.

Boys 11-12 400 free
Ryan Nicholson of Lansing Cats swam away with the victory in Friday's timed finals. Nicholson finished with a time of 4:42.50, nearly six seconds faster than Ridgewood YMCA's Harold Choo who came in second place with a time of 4:48.30. Third-place finisher Alex Smith from Westchester Marlins, finished with a time of 4:49.83. John Nunez (4:52.19), who finished fourth, was the only eleven-year-old to finish in the top 10. Fifth-place finisher Daniel DiGiacomo (4:54.17) and sixth-place finisher Eric Wang (4:56.00) both completed the event in under five minutes.

Girls 10-U 100 back
Cathy Tan, 10, from Long Island Aquatic Club won the event this afternoon with a Zone time of 1:17.06, dropping two seconds from her seed time. Finishing second was Elite Swim Club's Andrea Galea with a Zone time of 1:21.27. Following Galea with a Zone time of 1:21.43 was Annmarie Picinich from Ridgewood YMCA.

Boys 10-U 100 back
The winner today was Kevin Miller from Lansing Cats with a Zone time of 1:20.99, a half of a second faster than his seed time. Following Miller with a Zone time of 1:23.36 was Elite Swim Club's Chris Balbo. Third-place finisher was Ryan Ding from Berkeley Aquatic Club with a Zone time of 1:24.14.

Girls 13-14 200 breast
Jocelyn Yuen from X-Cel Swimming topped timed finals with a Zone time of 2:54.15. Berkeley Aquatic Club's Kate Leib placed second with a Zone time of 2:56.68. Ashley Corley from Scarlet Aquatic Club claimed third with a Zone time of 2:59.71.

Boys 13-14 200 breast
Leo Lim from Wyckoff won the crown with a meet-record time of 2:32.33. The top three finishers were separated by just more than three seconds as Samuel Mo came in second place with a time of 2:33.97 and J.R. Chansakul came in third place with a time of 2:35.41. Mo, from Badger Swim Club, and Chansakul, from Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics, both improved on their seed times by more than five seconds.

Girls 11-12 50 breast
Erin Barry from Berkeley Aquatic Club won the crown decisively with a time of 36.38. Audris Oh from Metuchen Edison finished in second-place with a time of 38.14, more than a second better than third-place finisher Alexandra Brown from X-Cel Swimming, whose time was 39.23. Joanna Han (39.41), Zoe Gregorace (39.45) and Sarah Jackson (39.80) were all able to finish the event in under 40 seconds as well.

Boys 11-12 50 breast
In a competitive timed finals, Ridgewood YMCA placed two swimmers in the top three. John Om won the event with a time of 35.65 and Harold Choo finished third with a time of 36.69. Wayne Chan from Metuchen Edison placed second with a time of 36.57. Zach Katz (37.40) from Elite Swim Club finished in fourth place and was the only 11-year-old to place in the top 10. His teammate Jeffrey Dong and Chan's teammate Gregory James finished in a fifth place tie (37.51).

Boys 10-U 100 breast
Ryan Brown (1:32.72) from Long Island Aquatic Club won the event this afternoon by dropping nine seconds from his seed time. Lansing Cats' Kevin Miller finished second with a Zone time of 1:34.62. Ryan Ding from Berkeley Aquatic Club followed Miller with a Zone time of 1:35.93.

Girls 10-U 100 breast
Cathy Tan from Long Island Aquatic Club, who dropped four seconds to get a Zone time of 1:30.85, captured the title. Berkeley Aquatic Club's Alexa Buckley (1:31.14), who also got a Zone time, placed second. Kalyn Fetter from Ridgewood YMCA followed Buckley with a Zone time of 1:34.41.

Girls 13-14 200 IM
Isla Maddox-Hutchinson from Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics won timed finals with a time of 2:31.36. Erin McElfresh (2:33.91) of Lansing Cats finished second and Nicole Rodriguez (2:36.08) edged out Cady Zawatson (2:36.14) for third place. Maddox-Hutchinson and Rodriguez are teammates at Asphalt Green.

Boys 13-14 200 IM
Samuel Mo (2:18.55) from Badger Swim Club won the event and broke the meet record this afternoon, which was set by Sean Roddy in 2006 with a time of 2:20.33. Finishing second was teammate Will Rappaport (2:19.56), who also cleared the previous meet record. Paul Soley (2:23.81) from Berkeley Aquatic Club was third place.
