Pioneer Wins Michigan A Girls High School State Champs

ANN ARBOR. PERENNIAL power Pioneer High School, of Ann Arbor, walked away with the team title at the Michigan Class A High School Girls Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the University of Eastern Michigan on November 18.

Pioneer amassed 225 points, while Grand Haven was second with 157.5 and Groose Pointe-North had 147. Pioneer won only three of the 12 events, but it made a statement loud and early and never looked back.

In the first event, Pioneer took the 200 yard medley relay in a very fast and hotly contested event. The winners clocked 1:47.43 as all six finalists swam under 1:50.

Two events later, Pioneer swept the 200 IM, as Katie Ladewski won in 2:06.31 with teammates Ally Wyatt second, and Jennifer Merte third. A fourth Pioneer, Alison Gregorka finished sixth.

Ladewski, who was one of three swimmers to win two individual events, added the 100 fly (56.30) to her win in the IM. Pioneer's standout, she took part in her school's third win, the 200 medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg.

Mercy High's Amy McCullough swep the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events, posting very strong times of 1:49.79 and 4:52.90, respectively.

The third double winner was Grand Haven's Abby Seskevics. The sprint sensation copped both the 50 (23.50) and 100 free (50.86). For good measure, she anchored Grand Haven's winning 200 free relay (1:36.44).

Kammy Miller produced a gem in winning the 100 yard breaststroke. The Grosse Pointe-North star clocked 1:03.68, then came back in the next event to swim on her school's winning 400 freestyle relay (3:30.97).

Dearborn's Renie Green won the backstroke in 58.04 while Ypsilanti's Alison Riccobono had little trouble in taking the one meter diving (476.50 points).
