TORONTO, Ontario, Canada, November 29. A day after posting a stunning world record in the 400 IM at the Canada Cup, a short course meter event in Toronto, Julia Smit crushed the American standard in the 200 IM.
Tonight, Smit clocked a time of 2:06.49 to wipe out Allison Wagner's record of 2:07.79 set in Palma de Mallorca, Spain back in 1993. The record was the longest standing in the women's short course meter books for the U.S.
Smit split the American standard as follows: 28.20, 59.74, 1:36.73, 2:06.49. Teammate Elaine Breeden finished second in 2:11.68, while Paige Schultz placed third in 2:13.73.
Last night, Smit set the world record in the 400 IM with a swift time of 4:25.87, smashing Kirsty Coventry's previous mark.
