West Virginia v. Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky. November 7. THE University of Louisville swimming and diving team swept visiting Big East rival West Virginia in the home opening meet at Ralph Wright Natatorium. The women won convincingly with a score of 182-94 and the men prevailed 178-122.

"It was a solid night for both the men and women's programs. We had season best times, we set pool records and it was a good team win," said head coach Arthur Albiero. "We still have much work to do but this is a step in the right direction."

U of L had standout performances from both new and veteran faces on the roster. Newcomer Raine Thompson won the 100- and 200-back for the women. Transfer Alex Sweet set a pool record in the 50-free and was a part of the winning 200-medley relay and the 400-free relay. Returning Olympian Andrei Radzionau won the 100- and 200-free and was a part of the winning 400-free relay. Fellow Olympian Vali Preda won the 100- and 200-breast and swam the breast leg of the 200-medley relay. Shane Lichtenberg and Amanda Henleben were the workhorses in the distance free events, with both swimmers winning the 500- and 1000-free. Therese Bergstrom was another multiple winner with firsts in the 100- and 200-back.

The Cardinals blasted off the blocks with wins in the 200-medley relay. Whitney Campbell, Therese Bergstrom, Nicole Landisch and Liz Halet combined to win the race. The men's foursome of Peyton Bobo, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy and Alex Sweet touched in 1:30.76.

"That was a great relay for both the men and women," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero.

In the 1000-free, Amanda Henleben went 10:04.90 for the win. Stephanie Juncker was third in 10:25.80. For the men, defending Shane Lichtenberg cruised to a win, posting a time of 9:29.32. Freshman Riley Martin was third, going 9:48.52.

In the 200-free, Liz Halet was narrowly out-touched, finishing second in 1:52.42. Sarah Andrews was third in 1:53.17. WVU's Morgan Callaway was the winner in 1:50.70. In the men's 200-free, defending BIG EAST Champion Andrei Radzionau won in 1:40.45 followed by teammate Brendon Andrews who went 1:41.29.

In the women's 100-back, freshman Raine Thompson was first, posting a time of 56.46. Lacey Bobo was third in 58.71. In the men's back Peyton Bobo won in 50.89 with Adam Madarassy was third with a time of 51.47.

In the 100-breast, Therese Bergstrom won in 1:04.14 with teammate Anna Dishuck in hot pursuit, touching in 1:06.19. Sara Hartman made it a sweep with a third place finish, going 1:06.40. Vali Preda led the men, besting the field in 56.40.

For the 200-butterfly, Jenny Schimenti touched first for the Cardinals in 2:05.13. Abby Miller was third in 2:05.46. For the men, Rafal Kuchta was the top U of L swimmer, touching second in 1:50.67.

In the women's 50-free, Nicole Landisch got on the board touching second in 23.53. The men were led by newcomer Alex Sweet set a pool record with a time of 20.45. Radzionau was second in 20.85 to make it a one-two sweep.

Cardinal newcomer Kayla Purkiser won the 1-meter board with a score of 278.85. McKenzie Long posted a score of 260.18. Scott Sargent won for the men, with a socre of 270.37. Teammate David Zamkov was second with a score 261.45.

In the 200-back, Raine Thompson was first to the wall to 2:02.14. Anna Dishuck was third in 2:02.68. Adam Isaacs was top finisher for the men with a third place, going 1:54.77.

In the 200-breast, Vali Preda notched another win, easily outpacing the field with a 2:05.49. Luke Wakefield was fourth in 2:14.77 to add to the Cardinal point total. For the women, Therese Bergstrom was first in 2:19.00 and teammate Fannie Lilliestrom was second in 2:22.51.

In the 500-free, Amanda Henleben had another win when she hit the wall in 4:56.26. Stephanie Juncker was fourth to add points with a time of 5:09.69. Shane Lichtenberg powered to the wall first with a time of 4:40.69. Riley Martin was third, going 4:48.26.

In the 100-fly, Nicole Landisch grabbed the wall in 55.62 for the U of L win with teammate Jenny Schimenti finishing third in 57.67. Rafal Kuchta was second and Adam Madarassy was third and Brendon Andrews fourth for the Cardinals.

In the 3-meter board, Kayla Purkiser won with a score of 289.73 with McKenzie Long posting a 282.00. David Zamkov took top honors for the Cardinal men with a score of 276.53.

In the women's 200-IM, For the men, Vali Preda was second behind rival Pablo Marmolejo. For the women, Anna Dishuck had the fastest time, going 2:06.98. Jenny Schimenti hit the wall in 2:08.58, but both had been exhibitioned out.

In the 400-free relay, the women were exhibitioned out, but the foursome of Whitney Campbell, Liz Halet, Aileen Cole and Therese Bergstrom combined to post a time of 3:36.64. The men's team of Andrei Radzionau, Brendon Andrews, Alex Sweet and Adam Madarassy took top honors with a time of 3:30.00 which is a pool record.
