September 23, 2008 Widely disputed as whether to consider it in statistics, in comparing Dara Torres age in the Games this year, going back to the Intercalated Games of 1906, there was actually a 47 yr old bronze medalist for Great Britain, William Henry, in the mens 800 free relay. The historians go back and forth all the time as to whether to call him the oldest person to have won a swimming medal. David Wallenchinshy, in his great book on the history of the Games, credits him with being the oldest person ever to have won a medal. I could have sworn that Steffen and Torres were actually one hundreth difference in that final of the 50. I didn't read everything thoroughly, and so maybe Steffen went the two hundredths faster you list her as doinh, in the prelims or semis. Incredible work Mr Bell.

September 23, 2008 Mr Bell, if I may, in regards to the statement in Adlington's entry in the 800 free, and the notation that Anita Lonsbrough was the first woman to set a world record at the Olympics, Anita was actually the FIFTH to do so. In 1912, in the women's 4x100 free relay, the winning team from GBR set the world record. That should make them the first FOUR for that accomplishment. Refer to page 993 of Wallenchinsky's book.

September 29, 2008 Thank you for your correction re Anita Lonsborough and her Olympic gld-medal status.

However, the reference is only for the 200 breast (for a British woman to set a wr en route win an Olympic gold).)

Undoubtedly otehr women accomplished tghis feat prior to her 48 yers ago bugt again the reference was only for tghat particular event.

Sorry fortghe misunderstanding.

And as for that 40-something woman winning @ the 1906 Olympics, I guess I'll have to go back in and amend the notation to reflect that fact.
