American Swimming Coaches Association Announces Annual Awards

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, September 9. LAST weekend at its award banquet held in Las Vegas, Nev., the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) announced its award winners for the past year.

Bob Bowman, who coached Michael Phelps to the greatest performance of all time with eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, easily walked away with the ASCA Coach of the Year honor.

Dick Hannula received the Peter Daland Award, given out in recognition of a lifetime of excellence in the coaching profession. Hannula, the author of Coaching Swimming Successfully and The Swim Coaching Bible, was a national team coach from 1973-85 on various international meets. He also managed the national team in 1979 and at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

ASCA also inducted Paul Blair, Frank Busch, Ray Buzzard, Mary Kelly Spitzer and Don LaMont into its Hall of Fame.

Awards of Excellence were also given out:
Gold (20 years): Dave Gibson (Brophy East Swim Team)

Silver (15 years): Tim Bauer (The Woodlands Swim Team)

Bronze (10 years): Bill Dorenkott (Ohio State University), George Kennedy (Johns Hopkins University) and Steven Lochte (Daytona Beach Swimming)
