U.S. Junior Nationals: Meet Records Continue to Fall During Fourth Day

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, August 7. THE fourth day of swimming at the U.S. Junior National meet held in Minneapolis witnessed even more meet records taking a tumble.

The women's 100 back demonstrated just how much that event has progressed in the last year. After six swimmers surpassed Elizabeth Beisel's meet record of 1:03.35 from last year in prelims with Rachel Bootsma, 14, of the Aquajets heading into finals with the standard at 1:02.47, the record fell even further at night. Bootsma dueled early meet star Dagny Knutson, 16, of Minot YMCA for the win, 1:01.71 to 1:02.28 with both clipping Bootsma's prelim record. Jessica Guro, 16, of Atlantis Aquatics rounded out the top three in 1:02.93.

The men's 100 back also dipped under the meet record in prelims and finals. Vladimir Morozov, 16, of Swim Torrance first broke Matt Thompson's 2007 record of 56.30 with a 56.09 during prelims. He wound up having an off swim at night and settled for fifth in 58.07. Patrick Murphy, 16, of Green Mountain answered the challenge in the finale with a winning record time of 55.61. Cole Cragin, 17, of The Fleet took second in 56.44, while Matthew Belecanech, 16, of Jersey Wahoos placed third in 57.42.

Ashley Evans' meet record of 4:12.77 from last year in the women's 400 free remained another year. Sara Giberson, 15, of Agua touched out Haley Anderson, 16, of Sierra Marlins, 4:13.79 to 4:13.90, in the championship final with Catherine Breed, 15, of Pleasanton just behind with a third-place 4:13.92.

Jason Taylor, 17, of Brandon Sports whacked a second off Chad La Tourette's meet record in the men's 400 free with a time of 3:55.19. That time eclipsed the 3:56.17 set by La Tourette while swimming for Mission Viejo in 2006. Trevor Scheid of Jewish Community touched second in 3:56.31, while Peter Benner of Savannah Swim placed third in 3:58.07.

After a morning in which four swimmers cleared Kasey Carlson's 2006 meet record of 1:10.77 during prelims, including Molly Hannis' record time of 1:10.08, the women's 100 breast record fell even further at night. Carlson, 16, of Terrapins wound up reclaiming the standard with a winning time of 1:08.29, while Alisa Finn, 17, of Wildcat finished second in 1:09.77. Hannis, 16, of Neptune Swimming, took third in 1:10.31.

Stuart Ferguson, 17, of Poseidon dropped the 2007 meet record of John Criste (1:03.21) twice during the day in the men's 100 breast. First, Ferguson paced qualifying with a time of 1:02.81, before winning the title in 1:02.58 at night. William Colbert, 16, of Schroeder YMCA placed second in 1:03.30, while Tim Freeman of Walnut Creek touched third in 1:03.33.

Lindsay Marchand, 17, of King Aquatics dropped the women's 100 fly record under 1:00 during prelims with a time of 59.56. That swim cleared Samantha Woodward's 2006 record of 1:00.47. Marchand could not dip under 1:00 again during finals, but still captured the title in 1:00.10. Whitney Lopus of Brophy East took second in 1:00.54, while Colleen Fotsch of Palo Alto snagged third in 1:01.09.

Frederico Castro of the Virginia Gators followed with a meet-record time of 54.25 in the men's 100 fly. He edged the 54.38 set by Sam Wilcher last year. Kevin Behrens, 16, of Munster Swim placed second in 54.42, while Kyle Whitaker, 16, of Duneland finished third in 54.49.

Brophy East took down the women's 400 freestyle relay meet record in the next event. Haley Krakoski, Lopus, Evans and Traycie Swartz posted a time of 3:48.60 to wipe out the 3:51.55 set by Sun Devil Aquatics last year. Krakoski and Swartz were both on that previous relay before switching over to Brophy East this year.

Redlands Swim Team and Schroeder YMCA then joined up to crush the men's 400 freestyle relay meet record of 3:29.68 set by Longhorn a year ago. Joey Hale, Tyler Harp, Mike Perry and Karl Krug turned in a time of 3:26.36 in victory for RST. Bert Cebertowicz, Mitchell Friedemann, Jonathan Whitcomb and Victor Leclere also cleared the former record with a second-place 3:29.51.
