Jarod Schroeder Joins Northwestern as Assistant Coach

EVANSTON, Illinois, July 14. NORTHWESTERN head men's swimming coach Bob Groseth today announced the addition of Jarod Schroeder as the program's new assistant coach. Schroeder, who served as the interim head coach at Maryland last year, takes over for the departed John Pontz, who took a similar position at Maryland.

The move for Schroeder is essentially a homecoming. The 1995 graduate of Northern Illinois served as the head age group coach with the Northwestern Aquatic Swim Association (NASA) beginning in 2000 while also working as a volunteer assistant with both NU's men's and women's varsity programs.

"In Jarod, we get a coach with vast experience in coaching at all levels," Groseth said. "He is a successful athlete at the conference, National and International levels, and is someone who is familiar with our program and well known to Club coaches across the country — especially in the Midwest.

"Jarod's impact will be significant and immediate. I am excited for him, our current swimmers and for the future of Northwestern swimming."

In addition to his duties with the Wildcats which continued until 2006, Schroeder served as the head coach of the New Trier Swim Club beginning in 2002. While at New Trier, he developed Olympic Trials qualifiers, U.S. Open finalists and U.S. National finalists, and was named the Illinois Swimming Coach of the year on two occasions.

Schroeder then became the assistant coach for the Terrapins prior to the 2006-07 season, serving as the primary coach for the sprint group and placing three athletes in the top eight at the ACC championships. He assumed the role of interim head coach for the 2007-08 campaign.

After finishing a career at NIU in which he served as team captain and was a two-time Illinois Collegiate Swimmer of the Year, Schroeder was elected to the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. He was a three-time Mid-America Conference Swimmer of the Year, earned seven individual conference titles and set three conference records. He was co-captain of the 1999 Pan-American Games team, where he was a double silver medalist. The previous year, he was a member of the 1998 USA Goodwill Games Team.

Following his time as a student-athlete, Schroeder took on volunteer assistant coaching jobs at his alma mater and the University of Wisconsin.

Schroeder and his wife, Liz, enjoy traveling and the fine arts.

Special thanks to Northwestern for contributing this report.
