MONTERREY, Mexico, July 8. SOME of the top youngsters in the world took the grand stage at the FINA World Youth Championships today held in Monterrey, Mexico.
Top-flight young Russian star Danila Izotov smoked the men's 400 freestyle with a time of 3:51.81, while Italy's Alex Di Giorgio (3:53.19) and Poland's Krzystof Pielowski (3:53.66) rounded out the top three.
Budding American star Dagny Knutson won a head-to-head duel with Ellen Fullerton of Australia in the women's 400 IM, 4:43.59 to 4:45.17, for the only other individual title up for grabs on the first day. Canada's Barbara Jardin placed third in 4:49.10.

A pair of relay titles was award as Italy's Luca Dotto, Marco Orsi, Fabio Gimondi and Luca Leonardi completed the men's 400 free relay in 3:19.09. Knutson claimed a second crown as the U.S. contingent of Samantha Tucker, Lily Moldenhauer, Knutson and Elizabeth Pelton snatched the women's 800 free relay in 8:04.49.
Four other semifinals took place. Canada's Amanda Reason topped women's 50 breast qualifying in 31.25, while Pelton paced the women's 100 back with a 1:01.41. Meanwhile, New Zealand's Daniel Bell clocked a 54.99 to lead the men's 100 back, while Germany's Marco Koch touched in 1:02.59 in the men's 100 breast.
