Dutch Nationals: Femke Heemskerk Claims Another Record, Pieter van den Hoogenband Blasts Off

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, June 7. FEMKE Heemskerk added the women's 100 back national record to her 200 IM standard from a day ago at the Dutch Nationals held in Eindhoven. Meanwhile, Pieter van den Hoogenband ripped off a strong time in the 200 free.

Heemskerk, swimming as the leadoff for her winning 400 medley relay team, clocked a time of 1:02.65 in the 100 back. That time eclipsed the 24-year-old record of 1:02.70 set by Jolanda De Rover in Amersfoot on June 23, 1984. De Rover went on to win the Olympic gold medal that year in the 200 back at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. She also won the 100 back bronze medal that same year.

That is the second longstanding record Heemskerk took down this weekend as she wiped out the 14-year-old standard of Minouche Smit in the 200 IM during prelims on the first day with a 2:15.52. Heemskerk also wound up winning the 200 free in 1:58.53.

Meanwhile, van den Hoogenband blistered the field in the 200 free with a meet-record time of 1:45.96. That is the third-best effort in the world this year behind only Michael Phelps (1:45.71) and Jean Basson (1:45.85). The time also is not too far off of van den Hoogenband's peak form of 1:44.89 set in 2002.

Meanwhile, Robin van Aggele set a meet record in the men's 100 fly with a time of 53.55. van Aggele also won the 400 IM in 4:30.97.

Additionally, Ranomi Kromowidjojo set a national age group record in the women's 50 back with a time of 29.00. Nick Driebergen followed in the men's 50 back with a meet-record time of 25.94.

Other wins went to Marleen Veldhuis in the women's 100 fly (58.14), Lia Dekker in the women's 200 breast (2:33.53), Thijs van Valkengoed in the men's 200 breast (2:17.74), Sharon van Rouwendall in the women's 800 free (8:49.52) and Tom Vangeneugden in the men's 800 free (8:09.12).
