COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 4. LAST weekend, the USA Swimming Rules and Regulations Committee met on May 30-31 in Dallas, Texas. USA Swimming's National Team Head Coach and General Manager Mark Schubert has accepted the USA Rules and Regulation Committee's recommendation regarding the times swam at the Texas Senior Circuit Meet at Texas A&M University.
Here is the official statement from USA Swimming regarding the short pool times:
The times swam at the Texas Senior Circuit Meet at Texas A&M University will not be considered eligible for entry into USA Swimming's official times database. However, swimmers who swam first-time qualifying times for Olympic Team Trials and other USA Swimming Championships during sessions that the pool was determined to be short will be eligible for entry in those events at the minimum qualifying time standard. Since the pool length was not the fault of the athletes, USA Swimming has made a one-time exception due to the unusual circumstances of the situation.

June 4, 2008 Now what about the Non-USA swimming athletes who made FINA Olympic Qualifying times? I have not seen any mention of that on Swimming World Magazine Submitted by: Dom
June 4, 2008 That would be up to each individual country's NGB, I would assume. This is the information USA Swimming has been kind enough to provide to the public at large through our site.
We haven't heard anything specific on other countries. Submitted by: Jason Marsteller
June 4, 2008 Worth looking in to. At one point the times from this meet appeared on the FINA database of qualified athletes, I no longer see them there however. Submitted by: Dom
June 4, 2008 Actually, I believe FINA would have to approve each time, or country's group of times, based on a petition by the host country's national federation to make an adjustment for each. This is because FINA is charged/clearing the entry times for the Olympics.
FINA could opt for a similar blanket acceptance, but that would be up to FINA to decide. Submitted by: hooperswim
June 4, 2008 Here's to hoping they do a better job of that than 4 years ago, when athletes who were entered at times faster than the "B" Quailfying standard repeatedly finished their events more than 30 seconds slower than those same standards. Submitted by: Dom
June 4, 2008 When is the pool distance ever the problem of the athletes and what were the "unusual circumstances"?

June 4, 2008 I am pleased that USA Swimming at least is going to let athletes enter meets that they "qualified" for. I still think they should have accepted adjusted times (~.015 seconds per 50) and also made a rules adjustment to require pool measurements on bulkhead pools prior to any meet from Sectionals on up. Fixed wall pools should require a certificate on file at USA Swimming. Submitted by: swimhouston
