World Short Course Championships: Flash! Ryan Lochte of the United States Breaks 100 IM World Record in Semis -- April 12, 2008

MANCHESTER, England, April 12. ANOTHER world record fell at the FINA World Short Course Championships as Ryan Lochte from the United States shaved time off of the former global standard in the 100 IM.
Lochte hit the touchpad at the 50 mark in 23.36, which was under record pace, and he brought the race home in 27.89 to complete the record-setting swim in the semifinal heats with a time of 51.25.

Lochte's time erased Ryk Neethling of South Africa's 51.52 swim, which he performed in 2005. Lochte also downed Neethling's World Championship record of 52.42, which he set in 2006, and he also set an American record, crushing Neil Walker's 2000 mark of 52.79.
Liam Tancock from Great Britain turned in a second-place performance of 52.27, which also fell under the former championship record standard. Gerhard Zandberg of South Africa took third with a 52.56 time.
Peter Mankoc from Slovenia posted a 52.90 time for fourth while Leith Brodie of Australia finished fifth in 53.31.
George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago (53.60), Christian Galenda from Italy (53.67) and Robin Van Aggele of the Netherlands (53.84) rounded out the eight qualifiers for tomorrow's finals.
