Canadian Trials: Two National Records Downed; Video of Entire Night -- April 5, 2008

MONTREAL, Canada, April 5. THE next-to-last day of Canadian Trials featured a pair of national records at the meet held in Montreal.

Joe Bartoch snagged the national record in the men's 100 fly when he hit the wall in 52.28. That readout eclipsed the 52.44 set by Mike Mintenko at the 2002 U.S. Open. Meanwhile, Adam Sioui finished second in 52.81, while Thomas Kindler took third in 53.19.

Annamay Pierse moved into the top 15 of all time in the women's 200 breast when she lowered her own national record in the event with a time of 2:24.65. She moved just ahead of Seul Ki Jung's 2:24.67 and behind Mirna Jukic's 2:24.58. She also wiped out her standard of 2:25.22 set last year in the Netherlands. Jillian Tyler placed second in 2:29.36, while Martha McCabe took third in 2:30.32.

In other action, Erica Morningstar picked up the women's 100 free title with a time of 55.38 to finally derail the Julia Wilkinson train as Wilkinson took second in 55.53. Victoria Poon claimed third in 55.83.

Keith Beavers touched out Tobias Oriwol in the men's 200 back, 1:59.42 to 1:59.66, while Tanya Hunks won the women's 800 free in 8:33.61. Lindsay Seeman took second in the event with a time of 8:37.98.

In the men's 1500 free, Ryan Cochrane crushed the field with a winning time of 15:11.32, while Kier Maitland placed second in 15:44.41.

In Paralympic events, Brian Hill won the men's 100 fly in 1:02.18, while Valerie Grand-Maison took the women's 100 fly in 1:08.11. In the 50 fly, Daniel Murphy won the men's title in 1:24.02, while Laura Jensen won the women's crown in 47.52.

The quartet of Kelly Stefanyshyn, Pierse, Michelle Landry and Elizabeth Collins closed the evening with a victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:13.49.
