YMCA National Championships: Pair of YMCA Records Fall -- April 3, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 3. TWO YMCA records fell during the third night off swimming at the YMCA National Championships, including one that stood for 13 years.

Women's Meet
Kelly Ann Baird, 16, of Winston-Salem won the 1000 free with a time of 9:49.37, while Cha-cha Bugatti, 14, of Sarasota took second in 9:56.92.

Leah Gingrich of West Shore followed by dropping the YMCA record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:13.00. The swim cleared the previous record of 4:13.35 set by Ashley Carusone of North Central Florida in 2003. Sarasota's Corinne Showalter wound up taking second under the previous record with a time of 4:13.21.

Margo Geer, 16, of Springfield snatched the 100 free title with a time of 50.20, while Emily Lloyd, 15, of Anne Arundel and Ashlee Linn, 15, of Sarasota took second and third in 50.70 and 50.71.

Sarasota's team of Linn, Showalter, Marissa Harrington and Sara Conner won the 800 free relay in 7:25.86.

Sabrina Benson, 14, of Triangle Area touched out teammate Mandy Myers, 2:00.57 to 2:00.82, in the 200 back.

Men's Meet
Luke Bushman, 17, of Green Bay won the 1000 free in 9:12.17, while Austin Detra of Sarasota took second in 9:18.48.

Woody Joye, 16, of Montgomery walked away with the 400 IM title in 3:52.89, while Mason Shaw, 16, of Spokane placed second in 3:55.65.

Evan Reed of Upper Main Line downed a 13-year-old record in the 100 free with a time of 44.51. Dod Wales previously set the record with a 44.69 back in 1995 while representing M.E. Lyons. Bert Cebertowicz of Schroeder and Peter Geissinger of Darien tied for second with matching 44.90s.

Bushman doubled up on the day with a win in the 200 back when he clocked a 1:49.77. Chuck Bartel of Triangle Area took second in 1:50.22.

Sarasota's Detra, Mark Cox, John Orban and Patrick Ceddia snagged the 800 free relay title in 6:43.98.
