Andrew Bree Under Investigation for Stimulant Use -- April 2, 2008

DUBLIN, Ireland, April 2. ACCORDING to Craig Lord of SwimNews.com, Andrew Bree is under investigation for "an adverse anti-doping finding."

In Lord's report, he states that Bree may have tested positive for a stimulant found in cold medicine during the European Short Course Championships held in December.

Bree, who is the only Irish swimmer headed to Beijing this year, could wind up with a punishment anywhere from a simple warning to a six-month suspension.

April 2, 2008 Could this be the reason why bree puled out of the recent euros? if the test was in December then Swim Ireland would have had the results for a while? perhpas they stopped him from entering because of the positive result on his test? Looks like more irish hyjinkx

April 2, 2008 I dont think thats true, as results do technically take 3 months to analyse and review.

April 3, 2008 Coachz in my opinion your scepticism is natural considering the absence of responsible reporting by the media. The way this story came to the public attention in Ireland is appalling. The national television broadcaster (RTE) finally had a handle on how to communicate this story in a balanced way by the 11pm news yesterday evening. In my opinion from experience Swim Ireland, The Irish Olympic Sports Council and the media should be able to handle due process in a professional and responsible way. It is unfortunate for Andrew and future Irish professional swimmers that they will be subjected to a legacy of "more irish hyjinkx" without the evidence/findings of a formal investigation/hearing. He took a test and failed. In the absence of information there is scandal, doubt and speculation. That is par for the course. In reflection, I am happy at this time to give Andrew the benefit of the doubt and to wait and see the outcome of the formal investigation focusing on the facts.

April 3, 2008 in my own refection of my above comment it was not targeted at andrew but at the irish system, i have known bree for a long time and i dont see him cheating, but i do see si trying to protect a very fragile swimming community re: atlanta and murphy report and ongoings
