Samsung National Water Polo League Title Goes to Central Gauteng

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 17. THE star-studded Central Gauteng OJ Eagles side lifted the inaugural Samsung National Water Polo League title in fine style, by retaining their 100 percent unbeaten record at the King Edward School today.

Coached by Croatian Vladimir Trninic, with national caps in Rick Diesel, the le Roux brothers, Ettiene and Pierre, and dynamic goalkeepers Dwayne Flatscher and Marvin Killian in their ranks, the side dominated proceedings in driving rain at the short course aquatics arena.

Central Gauteng OJ Eagles finished off the league triumph by beating their Gauteng rivals Central Gauteng Old Edwardians 10-5 in the final match. On Saturday, Central Gauteng Old Edwardians, the hosts, showed fine form in downing Western Province 7-6 in a thrilling encounter, before outplaying KwaZulu Natal 14-7 in one of today's fixtures.

"Before the final day's matches, I told my players to treat each game as a new challenge and they maintained their composure, with the win over Central Gauteng Old Edwardians been particularly pleasing to us," said Trninic.

"Central Gauteng Old Edwardians played well against our team throughout the Samsung National Water Polo league competition and I am surprised that they battled with KwaZulu Natal and Western Province in the league matches in Cape Town and Durban, but they looked a much better side in their smaller short course pool here at the King Edward School."

"I told my guys to build our attacks off a strong defensive plan and we maintained discipline and commitment to come out on top," added Trninic.
