Swimming Canada Announces Tri-Nations Cup

QUEBEC, Canada, February 22. SWIMMING Canada's CEO and National Coach Pierre Lafontaine announced the inaugural 2008 Tri-Nations Cup.

Hosted in Quebec City at Laval University on August 1-2, the inaugural Tri-Nations Cup competition will showcase Canada's 2012 Olympic potential hopefuls in a two-day back-to-back shootout type meet. Canadian swimmers aged 22 and under males, as well as 20 and under females will be competing against athletes from Great Britain and France.

"This competition will bring World Class performances and history together," said Lafontaine. "It will celebrate international Sport and the foundation of Quebec as part of its 400th Anniversary." The Tri-Nations Swimming Cup meet coincides with Quebec City's 400th anniversary; North America's oldest city. Our main goal with hosting such a meet is to give an opportunity to our athletes who are on the cusp of making the Olympic team to competed at a high level. This is our way of continuously preparing our future 2012 Olympics hopefuls."

National Program Director for British Swimming, Michael Scott is looking ahead at preparing his squad to competing in London for the 2012 Olympics.

"We were very excited to receive an invitation to compete against Canada and France," said Scott. "It is very important for us to provide great opportunities like this to our next generation of swimmers. We welcome this great occasion to fast track our young swimmers' performances."

The competition format will feature a 50m Olympic event program. Each event will see two athletes per country racing in a shoot out type of event. A points system will be put in place to determine which country takes away the 2008 Tri-Nations cup.
