Dartmouth v. Columbia

NEW YORK, New York, February 16. COLUMBIA downed Dartmouth, 173-123, and two Uris Pool records fell in Columbia's final dual meet of the season at Uris Swim Center.

The Big Green opened the meet by sweeping the three-meter diving and, in the third event, taking the top two spots in the 1000 free for a 33-22 advantage, but from then on, it was all Lions.

Hyun Lee broke a 24-year-old Uris Pool record of 1:38.56 to win the 200 free and pull the Lions within eight points after four events. The previous mark of 1:38.88 was set by Dave Larson of the New York Athletic Club in 1984.

"We were very happy with the meet outcome, to have the seniors get a win," noted Jim Bolster, head coach of swimming. "We had some guys who usually don't get to win a race step up and do that today. We are still focused 100 percent on Easterns [the EISL meet]."

The Lions grabbed the lead, 49-43, after the fifth event by sweeping the top three spots in the 50 back. Adam Powell was first in 24.73, followed by Gabe Schubiner (25.17) and Nathan Mormann (26.66).

Darren Pagan (59.33) and Josh Brown (1:00.80) earned the top two places in the 100 breast. Two more Columbia 1-2-3 sweeps ensued, as Steve Ko (22.84), John Dragelin (23.17) and Nick Barron (24.26) led the 50 fly, and Lee (21.15), Kevin Wakefield (22.14) and Stephen Yang (22.17) earned the first three places in the 50 free, giving the Lions a 96-53 advantage at the meet's midway mark.

Following the 1m diving, in which Jeff Hull and Dave Levkoff took second and third of seven, Kevin Wakefield took first in the 100 free in 48.31.

In event 11, Zach Glassman won the 50 breast 27.15, followed by Dragelin in 27.65.

The Lions snagged each of the top three – swimming as exhibition entries — in the 100 fly. Darren Pagan, swimming in lane two, was first in 51.06, Cedric Cheung-Lau took second (52.63), Vinson Wang was third.

In the 200 individual medley, Jordan Kobb (1:58.29), Adam Bulkley (1:58.64) and Glassman (1:59.58) were first, second and third to the wall.

In the meet's second event, Columbia nabbed the top two spots in the 200 medley relay to tie the score, 18-18, led by Adam Powell, Glassman, Ko and Pagan in 1:34.19. Just more than two seconds behind that foursome were Stephen Yang, Eric Tang, Barron and Wakefield.

The meet was the final home competition in the careers of Lion seniors Darius Dehnad, Dean Spirito, and captain Henning Fog. Coaches Jim Bolster and Gordon Spencer read a tribute on behalf of each of their senior student-athletes to a captive audience.
