International Swimming Hall of Fame Announces Lucile Anderson Collection Display

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, February 7. THE International Swimming Hall of Fame has announced the addition of an important collection to its memorabilia and historical swim wear collection.

A gift from George and Nancy Faulkner, of Miami, "The Lucile Anderson Collection" consists of photographs, scrapbooks, posters and swimsuits. Its historical significance is that it documents the role played by female professional swimmers in not only promoting the swimming and diving and female athleticism, but in creating the demand for swimming pools in every major city and small town in the nation, in the first half of the 20th Century.

"We are very grateful to the Faulkner's not only for donating the ‘Lucile Anderson Collection' to our museum, but for preserving this incredible and historically significant collection for future generations. It will make an important addition to what is already the finest swim wear and swimming related memorabilia collection in the world," said Bob Duenkel, Curator and Executive Director of the International Swimming Hall of Fame's Museum of Swimming.

Born in 1892, in Salt Lake City, Anderson was a stenographer who was inspired by the pioneer swimming promoter, Annette Kellerman, to become a professional swimmer and diver. The "Lucile Anderson Collection" documents Lucile's career from 1912 through the 1940s as Kellerman's greatest imitator and competitor on the vaudeville, carnival and circus circuits. Anderson was also the World Women's High Diving Queen who held the women's world record of diving head first from 102 feet into four and a half feet of water.

Photographs, posters and her beautiful silver sequined performance bathing costume are now on display in the Speedo "History of Swimwear" exhibit, at the Museum of Swimming at the International Swimming Hall of Fame, one block south of Las Olas and A1A, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
