Former Collegiate Swimmer Makes Silver Screen Debut

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 5. RECENTLY, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com heard a rumor that former collegiate swimmer Thomas Clavier made his debut in the motion picture industry. Clavier appeared on the silver screen as a featured extra in the spoof movie Meet The Spartans. The film actually opened No. 1 in the box office during its first weekend, and has grossed approximately $30 million worldwide.

We tracked down the former Indiana Hoosier and Tennessee Volunteer's phone number, and had the chance to talk to T.C. about his interesting experience.

The Louisiana swimmer turned bodybuilder, who has a budding modeling career on the side, decided to attend a casting call while working in New Orleans where the movie was filmed.

"I was working over the summer in New Orleans, and I saw they were hiring extras," Clavier said. "So I went and tried out, and wound up getting the job."

Once he got the call back and went to work on set, he had the chance to meet the movie's star, Carmen Electra, as well as see what it was like to actually work on set as he was cast as Electra's gardener Antonio. While we are not condoning the broadcast of an illegal copy of Clavier's appearance, there are several videos of Clavier's performance on the Internet.

"It was fun and was a new experience," Clavier said. "It was exciting to be part of another team, and see how they all worked out their problems together on set."

His family and friends have already chimed in after seeing Clavier on screen.

"They are all saying ‘It could quite possibly be the best movie in the world,'" the always jestful Clavier said. "Carmen Electra won't quit blowing up my cell phone now, and that gets a little annoying."

Clavier has not left the sport of swimming as he returned to Knoxville, Tenn., to help mentor Andrew Bree at the University of Tennessee.

"I have been working with the college guys at Tennessee and helping with Andrew, who is swimming for Ireland and will be in the Olympics," Clavier said. "I have been helping him with technique and strength & conditioning training."

As for the future, the swimmer most known for swimming his way to seventh in the 100 fly at the Big Ten Championships with a torn ACL in 2005, Clavier has hopes of becoming a teacher. His long-term plans also include teaching on a Native American reservation.
