Fordham v. Massachusetts

AMHERST, Massachusetts, February 2. THE UMass swimming and diving team split against Fordham in the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. The men's swimming and diving team beat Atlantic 10 rival Fordham 185 to112 making them 5-2 in the conference. The Minutewomen lost 112 to 186 to bring them to 4-3 in the A-10. A large crowd gathered for the UMass Senior Day and witnessed an outstanding performance from senior A.J. Vozella as he broke the Jospeh R. Rogers Jr. Pool record in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:41.01). A.J. Vozella also finished first in the 100 yd. freestyle (46.97). The UMass men's squad finished first in 12 of the 16 events making them a perfect 11-0 all-time against Fordham.

Freshman Max Butler had two first place finishes for the Minutemen in the 100 back (53.89) and the 200 back (1:56.62). Butler also swam the first leg of the first-place finishing 200 medley relay team (1:34.43). Junior Tristan Partridge, sophomore Justin Brooks, and freshman Brendan Jones swept the 1000 yd. free event. Senior Zack Priest led the 200 butterfly (1:53.35) as the Minutemen swept that event as well. It was a battle right to the finish in the 200 yd. breaststroke as freshman Brian Schmidt took second place (2:10.32). Junior Nate Bromage and senior Zack Priest finished strong for the men's squad taking first and second, respectively, in the 100 yd. butterfly.

The Minutewomen got out to a strong start finishing second and third in the 200 medley relay. The Minutewomen saw first place finishes from sophomore Kathryne Chalikis in the 50 yd. freestyle (24.92) and sophomore Elizabeth Walsh in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:55.33). In the final event of the day, the 200 yd. freestyle relay, the Minutewomen came up just short of a first place finish with a time of 1:39.63

In diving today, senior Reuben Rappe led the men's squad with first place finishes in the 1-meter dive (278.55) and the 3-meter dive (322.20). Sophomore Byron Johnson scored points for UMass finishing third in both diving events. The women's diving squad took first and second in both diving events. Freshman Anne Fogerty took home first in the 1-meter dive (229.04) and the 3-meter dive (273.15) while junior Sarah Hortsmann took second in the 1-meter dive (207.22) and 3-meter dive (226.57).
