Delaware v. William and Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia, February 2. THE University of Delaware swim teams capped off their regular season by splitting a dual meet with William & Mary at the Recreation Center and Adair Gymnasium.

The men topped the Tribe, 171-127, to improve to 11-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Their 11 wins match the all-time single-season record, equaling the 1965-66 and 1977-78 squads.

In the women's meet, Delaware dropped a 183-117 decision to William & Mary. With the loss, the Hens end the regular season with a 12-5 overall mark and a 3-4 record in the CAA. Only three other Blue Hen teams ever won more meets in a season. Last year's squad along with the 1979-80 and 1980-81 teams all won 13 contests.

For the men, Andrew Zinn (at right) once again led the way, winning four events including two individual competitions. In the 50-yard freestyle, Zinn broke the pool record after gliding to a time of 20.56. Later, he won the 100-yard event in 46.11 before anchoring the victorious 200-medley and 400-freestyle teams.

John Ohlhaver, Dominic Pavlik, and Scott Tsuchitani also won two events for the Hens. Ohlhaver and Pavlik both served alongside Zinn on the two relay squads, while Tsuchitani won the 100-butterfly (53.51) and was the fourth member of the 200-medley team that finished in 1:36.36.

Garrett Arant and Matt Wehrman also won individual swimming events for Delaware. The former took the 1650-freestyle in 16:25.54, while the latter won the 500-yard event in 4:48.13. Robert MacLeish was the only other swimmer to win an event after rounding out the 400-freestyle team that finished in 3:08.62.

The Blue Hens also took both diving events as Thomas Gallagher won the 3-meter contest with a score of 254.18 before Matt Abbruzzese took the 1-meter board after recording 176.50 points.

On the women's side, three swimmers won two events apiece to lead the Blue Hens. Cortney Barry, Delaware's standout distance freestylist, won both the 500 and 1650. In the 500-free, she finished in 5:12.37, while she cruised to a time of 17:36.08 in the 1650.

Kellie Pastore also took both breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:07.91 before capturing the 200 in 2:24.78.

Diver Shannon Burke rounded out the Blue Hen victors, winning both of her events as well. She scored 158.33 points on the 1-meter board before notching 219.98 in the 3-meter event.
