Carmel High School Stripped Of Title

From the Indianapolis Star – In an unprecedented move, Carmel High School was stripped of its 1995 boys swimming state title following a legal battle over a former transfer student’s eligibility.

“We will always know we won it, even if they take our plaque away, because we know we won it in the pool,” said Pablo Gutierrez, a Greyhounds senior who was a freshman on the 1994-95 swim team.

As the folks in Carmel lament, they’re cheering — sort of — farther north, where South Bend Riley was made state champion Tuesday.

“It is bittersweet,” Riley athletic director John Berta said. “We were soundly whipped in the pool and to come back and hand us the trophy later?
