BYU at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyoming, January 26. THE University of Wyoming swimming and diving team had a tough Saturday as they dropped a pair of dual meets to Mountain West Conference leading BYU at Corbett Pool. The Cowgirls fell by a score of 155-88 and the Cowboys dropped a 144-99 dual.

With today's losses, the Cowgirls fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the MWC while the Cowboys fall to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. BYU improves to 11-0, 7-0 on the women's side and their 23rd ranked men improve to 12-2, 4-0.

"I thought the kids did the best they could coming off a hard fought set of wins last night. We were just a little flat and tired today" said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "However, I think racing hard on back to back days like this will really benefit us down the road. Our divers were outstanding as usual today and really impressed a lot of people this weekend."

By sweeping both events, the Cowboy divers were a big bright spot on an otherwise tough day. Freshman Mark Murdock, the reigning MWC Diver of the Week, won both men's events with a one-meter score of 299.40 and a three-meter score of 294.23. Murdock won all four events he competed in over the weekend. Fellow freshman Colter Yancey had the highest three-meter score of 296.70 but was an exhibition diver in the event. Yancey also placed second in the one-meter event with a score of 293.84.

"I am very happy with all of our divers and especially the men," said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. "Our guys are really on fire right now. Our three freshmen keep getting better and Tyler (Miller) is right there with them. It is especially exciting to see the kids doing their best stuff at this point in the season."

Seniors Sam King and Levi Bell had the best individual performances for the Cowboy swimmers. King won a very tight 400 IM by touching the wall in a time of 4:05.72. Bell won the 100 breaststroke in another very close finish with a time of 57.47.

Freshman Lesley Young won the only individual event for the Cowgirls as she touched the wall in a time of 1:05.78 in the 100 breaststroke. She won that race by just .01 seconds.

Next weekend, the UW divers will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to compete in the 2008 Air Force Diving Invite which will be held on both Friday and Saturday. The swim team will not return to action until Friday, Feb. 8 when the women host Colorado State. The Cowboys will join the women in hosting Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 9.
