Vermont vs. Providence

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, January 26. THE University of Vermont women's swimming and diving team defeated Providence College 143-94 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The win is the Catamounts' ninth straight as they close out the regular season with an 11-5 mark.

"Overall we had some good performances today," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "I am happy with how our women came out to wrap up the regular season and am happy with where we are going into the upcoming conference championship."

Vermont had a balanced performance that saw eight different individuals pick up victories, as well as two relay teams. The Cats opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200-medley relay. The team of Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.), Ashley Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.), Stephanie Tomlin (Park City, Utah) and Rachel Kent (Mystic, Conn.) won in a time of 2:07.82.

A trio of Connecticut natives picked up Vermont's next three victories led off by Lauren Honrath (Monroe, Conn.) who won the 1,500 freestyle in a time of 18:08.15. Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) took the 200 freestyle in 2: 08.30 and Kent won the 50 free in 28.33.

UVM also took the top two spots in four different events: Nicole Underhill (South Burlington, Vt.) and Blayne Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.) in the 200 IM, Tomlin and fellow freshman Michelle Patrick (Jericho, Vt.) in the 100 butterfly, MacMillan and Amanda Murphy (Burlington, Mass.) in the 100 backstroke, and Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) and Lauren Anderson (Essex, Vt.) in the 400 freestyle.

Freshman Renee Gliddon won the one-meter diving with a score of 225.68 and the Cats closed out the meet with its four seniors, Underhill, Christa Sherburne (Potsdam, N.Y.), Cristin O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) and Eryka Karz (Mt. Prospect, Ill.), taking first place in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Catamounts are now off until they travel to the University of Maine for the America East Championships on February 14-17.
