Notre Dame Men at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Illinois, January 19. THE No. 17 Northwestern celebrated Senior Day with a 189-111 win over No. 21 Notre Dame at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The Wildcats improve their dual meet record to 6-5 on the season with the win, while the Fighting Irish fall to 3-6 on the year with their loss.

Northwestern kicked off the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay, swimming a time of 3:22.75. Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) comprised the relay for the 'Cats.

In the 1,000 free, Northwestern freshman Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) and Notre Dame's Andrew Deters were neck-and-neck at the 500-yard mark, then Park blasted ahead to win the race by more than seven seconds with a season-best time of 9:24.11. Senior Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) also had a season-best effort for NU, finishing third with a 9:35.52.

Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) won the 200 free with a 1:40.57, followed in second by freshman Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette), who turned in a time of 1:42.87.

Bubolz and sophomore Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) swept the top two spots in the 100 back with times of 51.24 and 51.87, respectively. Vogel out-touched Notre Dame's Andrew MacKay by .02 of a second to claim the second-place finish.

Franklin won the 100 breast with a 57.20, besting Notre Dame's Sam Pendergast by .08 of a second. Senior Adam Lewno (Racine, Wis./J.I. Case) had a strong showing with a third-place time of 59.80.

Northwestern continued to dominate the first part of the meet, sweeping the top three positions in the 200 fly. Nilsson won by more than three seconds with a time of 1:49.04, besting teammates Park in second (1:52.08) and Mathews (1:54.45) in third.

Notre Dame claimed its first win of the meet when John Lytle took first in the 50 free with a 20.85, followed by three Northwestern swimmers. Senior Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) was second with a 21.10, Barbic finished third with a 21.25 and freshman Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) was fourth with a 21.89.

During the first diving break, ND's Michael Bulfin won the 3-meter board with a score of 390.98, while Northwestern senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) put up an NU-season-best score of 356.70 to take second.

ND picked up its third event win in a row following the break with Lytle's 45.14 in the 100 free, but Barbic (46.19) and Bubolz (46.99) finished second and third for the 'Cats.

Beckman's 1:50.67 in the 200 back was good enough to claim victory, while Franklin won his second event of the day with a 2:05.13 in the 200 breast. Nilsson's third win came via a 4:32.48 in the 500 free, followed by Walls in second with a 4:38.55.

Bubolz got a race from teammates Ehret and senior Charlie Cunnick (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport Central) in the 100 fly, with the trio sweeping the top three spots. Bubolz swam a 51.39, besting Ehret's 51.76 and Cunnick's 52.03.

During the second diving break, McIntosh recorded his second team-season-best score of the day with a first-place effort of 326.70 on the 1-meter board.

Coming out of the break, Park won his second event of the day with a 4:02.92 in the 400 IM before NU's team of Nilsson, Barbic, Beckman and Mathews swam a 3:03.51 to win the 400 free relay.
