Missouri v. Iowa State

AMES, Iowa, January 19. THE 20th-ranked Mizzou women's swimming and diving team (10-1, 2-1 Big 12) earned the program's 13th-straight win over Iowa State, with a 174-121 thumping of the host Cyclones. The Tigers captured 11 of 14 non-exhibition events, including the first 9 of 10, in their conference road win.

"I could not have asked for more from the girls today," said MU Assistant Coach Stefanie Williams. "They did a great job of stepping up and racing. Even when they weren't racing they were supportive of one another. We're in preparation mode for conference and they got the job done today. It was a quick turn-around from event-to-event and they raced well and had fun doing it."

It was junior Kendra Melnychuk who stole the show on Saturday, which is nothing out of the ordinary for the Canadian. Melnychuk swept both diving events on the day, setting two records in the process. The Canadian totaled 340.73 points on the 3-meter board, crushing the previous school record of 327.36 points and setting a new Beyer Pool record. Melnychuk easily won the 1-meter diving competition with her score of 296.25.

Sophomore Colleen Gordon almost set a pool record herself in Saturday's action. The Missouri City, Texas, native's winning time of 1:51.13 in the 200 free was just a tenth off of the pool record. Junior Carly Sullivan touched in second in a time of 1:55.23 with classmate Kirsten David rounding out the top-three (1:56.83).

Gordon and Sullivan completed another 1-2 finish in the 500 free. Gordon raced a sub-five minute time of 4:55.88 with Sullivan touching the wall at 5:03.96.

Another Tiger recording a pair of victories in Ames was senior Taye Patterson. The Valdes Monts, Quebec, native posted a time of 56.87 to earn the win in the 100 back and returned to the pool five events later to triumph in the 100 free (52.86).

After recording a second-place showing in the 100 back (58.82), junior Lori Halvorson would return for victory in the 200 portion of the event in a time of 2:05.78.

Halvorson's classmates, Lauren Cox and Jill Granger, also joined the winner's circle on Saturday. Cox sprinted to the win in the 50 free in a time of 24.92, while Granger raced to victory in the 200 fly (2:06.04). Freshman Melissa Jamerson secured the second spot in the 200 fly in a time of 2:07.05.

Fellow freshmen Lauren Lavigna and Francie Szostak swept the top spots in the 1000 free. Lavigna earned the win in a time of 10:22.13 with Szostak touching in just behind in a time of 10:23.53.

The team also recorded a relay win during their stay in Ames. The quartet of Halvorson, Patterson, freshman Morgan McCleery and senior Arica Jacinto combined for the win in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:48.39.
