University of Maryland Baltimore County at Binghamton

VESTAL, New York, November 3. THE UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Binghamton at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center as the men prevailed with a score of 170-127 and the women, 172-125.

The Retriever men improve to 2-1 on the season after falling to Navy in their home-opener last weekend, while the women even their record at 2-2 after falling to Navy and New Hampshire last weekend. The Bearcat teams each fall to 0-2 on the season after being defeated by Boston University in their home-opener last weekend.

On the women's side, the Retrievers won 12 of 16 events on the way to victory, including five events that saw Retriever sweeps, while the men claimed 9 of 16 events, also registering 1-2-3 sweeps in five events.

Junior Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada/Msgr. Paul Dwyer) led the Retrievers in the win, leading Retriever sweeps of the 200 and 500 freestyles, as he turned in times of 1:45.64 and 4:47.57, respectively. Bronson was also victorious in the 100 free, winning with a time of 48.50.

Freshman Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Rasmus Kutt (Tallinn, Estonia/Gustav Adolf Gymnasium) each added two victories of their own as Reitz led sweeps of the 100 and 200 butterfly events with times of 52.25 and 1:56.75 and Kutt was fastest with times of 53.24 and 1:55.44. Both Kutt and Reitz were also part of the 200 medley relay, along with senior Scott Auchter (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) and sophomore Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) that turned in a winning time of 1:37.46.

The only other individual winner for the Retrievers was freshman Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontatrio, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) who led a sweep of the 1000 free in 9:53.65.

The Retrievers spread the wealth on the women's side, as ten different swimmers recorded individual victories during the competition. Juniors Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) and Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) teamed with freshman Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and senior Lindsey Engler (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) to start the meet off with a winning time of 1: 52.46 in the 200 medley relay. Engler and Wohlers were also part of the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, as they teamed with sophomore Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and freshman Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) to win the race with a time of 3:42.79.

Cantwell, Surkovich, and Kaplanova each led Retrievers sweeps of their respective events as Cantwell won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:23.07, Surkovich turned in a time of 2:12.25 in the 200 individual medley, and Kaplanova led the Retrievers in the 100 breast with a time of 1: 08.00. Ryan also tacked on an individual victory of her own with a time of 55.66 to win the 100 free.

Freshman Cassie Dobrzanski (Maugansville, Md./North Hagerstown) continued her unbeaten streak as she led a sweep of the 1000 free, winning in a time of 10:34.56, while sophomore Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) led the final sweep, winning the 200 fly with a time of 2: 11.67.

Other individual winners for the Retrievers included freshman Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech), who won the 200 free in 1:59.07, junior Joy Wilde (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields), who won the 50 free in 25.46, sophomore Brittany Johnson (Ponte Vedra, Fla./The Bolles School) who turned in a winning time of 5:24.28 in the 500 free and freshman Gaby Johnston (Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) who won the 100 fly with a time of 1: 00.21.
