Western Illinois at Illinois State

NORMAL, Illinois, November2. THE Illinois State swimming and diving team pulled together for a close victory over Western Illinois with the Redbirds taking the 142-101 win over the Leathernecks. Freshmen Ashley Bachler and Molly Gomberg, along with sophomore Caitlin Falconer and junior Lauren Williams all had personal-best times in their respective events.

Head swimming and diving coach Steve Paska felt the competition was tough but individual performances helped the team.

"We had a number of season and personal best swims (Friday)," said Paska. "I knew it would be a close meet going into it. Western has very solid sprinters and it made us race to the best of our ability. As a team they had very solid finishes. We need to work on turns and finishes in the upcoming weeks.

"With some individual wins we were able to pull ahead of this close meet. Christine Steinbach won both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events. Lindsay Dinkelman won the 100-yard breaststroke for us and had a solid performance. She set the tone and led us to victory and Tracy Deyell has swam with consistency this entire season and it showed in her win in the 400-yard IM (individual medley)."

Paska felt this meet has placed the team on the right track.

"We are on the right track," Paska said. "It is always exciting having competitive meets like this. We have met this objective of performing well at this meet and we were victorious. We currently hold a 4-0 record, and I am looking forward to how we will continue to do throughout the season."

Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann was pleased with the Redbird diver's performances.

"I was impressed with how the divers competed as a group," said Hoffmann. "They each had a bright point in their performances. I am looking forward to see how Corrie Heine, Liza Perrino and Katie Janonis will compete in back-to-back meets tomorrow."

Special thanks to Illinois State for contributing this report.
