Miami University Women Take Win Over Marshall, 166-91 -- October 6, 2007

OXFORD, Ohio, October 6. MIAMI University's women's swimming and diving team won nine events as it opened its 2007-08 season with a 166-91 dual meet win over the Marshalll Thundering Herd at Nixon Aquatic Center. The victory extended Miami's streak of consecutive dual meet wins to 17.

Miami opened with a first and second place finish in the 400 medley relay as Miami's "A" relay team finished in first place clocked in a time of 4:29.54, while Miami's "B" relay team finished in second place with a time of 4:40.34. Miami made it back-to-back wins, as freshman Sarah Bullock (Louisville, Kent./duPont Manual) touched the wall with a first-place time of 9:31.81 in the 800 freestyle.

Junior Allison Stevens (Laurel, Md./James Hubert Blake), freshman Carly Gibson (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and junior Maggie French (Dunwoody, Ga./Greater Christian School) took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle, as Stevens won the event clocking in at 2:11.75. Gibson and French had times of 2:12.97 and 2:15.31, respectively.

Miami finished 1-2 in three of the next four events, and won in all four events. Juniors Tenley Marsteller (Erie, Penn./McDowell) and Jennifer Nemeth (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke as Marsteller won the race with a time of 1:10.58 and Nemeth earned a time of 1:11.30. Sophomore Karen Frazier (Placerville, Calif./St. Francis) earned nine points in her victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.97). Senior Kathryn Stephens (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) earned top spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:25.06 and junior Alyson Schmidt (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) led a 1-2-3 Miami finish with a time of 28.31 in the 50 freestyle.

After a 20-minute break, senior Kristen Bezier (Evans City, Penn./Seneca Valley) finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.97, followed by a 1:02.60 second-place finish by French. The streak of first-place finishes continued as freshman Miranda Kaltenborn (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's Episcopal) won the 200 backstroke (2:30.57).

Marshall ended Miami's run of first-place finishes as the Thundering Herd won four of the last five events. The lone Miami win in the last five events came from Stephens, who won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.63.
