Maurer Wins 100m Back; Breaks American Record -- January 13, 1998

PERTH, AUSTRALIA - Lea Maurer captured the 4th gold medal for the U.S. at the World Championships with a victory in the women's 100m backstroke.

Denis Silantiev of Ukraine won the men's 200m butterfly in a time of 1:56.61. Frank Esposito of France took silver in 1:56.77 and American Tom Malchow was third in 1:57.26.

Russia's Alexander Popov proved that he is still swimming's greatest sprinter when he defended his 100m freestyle title.
