Hayley Peirsol, Chip Peterson Claim Distance Titles on First Night of Santa Clara Grand Prix -- June 28, 2007

SANTA CLARA, California, June 28. ON the first night of what should prove to be an eventful four days of long course meter competition at the Santa Clara Grand Prix held in Santa Clara, Calif., from June 28-July 1, Club Wolverine's Hayley Peirsol and North Carolina's Chip Peterson picked up distance freestyle titles.

Peirsol checked in at 16:12.08 in the 1500 free to finish nearly a second shy of the meet record of 16:11.23 set by newly-minted world record holder Kate Ziegler in 2005. Emily Brunemann, a Club Wolverine teammate clocked a 16:31.55 for second place, while North Carolina's Whitney Sprague finished third in 16:41.46.

Other notable finishes came from 16-year-old Mizuki Nonaka of Japan with fourth place in 16:47.13, and a seventh-place 16:49.38 from open water swimming phenom Chloe Sutton, 15, in 16:49.38.

Peterson notched an 8:02.59 to easily outdistance New Zealand's Kane Radford, 16, in the 800 free. Meanwhile, Radford touched in 8:11.25 for second place, while Pine Crest's Joey Pedraza took third in 8:17.06.

Japan had a pair of top-eight finishers in 17-year-olds Yuma Kosaka (8:20.47) and Masatoshi Aso (8:23.67), who took sixth and seventh, respectively.
