International Field Takes On Pan Pacific Invitational

STANFORD, California, June 24. AN international-laden field began battle at the 2007 Pan Pacific Invitational held in Stanford, Calif., from June 23-24. With swimmers from all over the Pan Pacific region, some solid long course meter times went down at the meet.

Men's 100 freestyle
The Aussies ruled in the men's sprint event with a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the race. Matt Targett clocked a top-20 time in the world this year with a 49.35, while Eamon Sullivan touched in 49.78. Tim LaForest placed third in 50.71, while Reece Turner finished fourth in 50.80.

Women's 200 freestyle
An Aussie top two came through in the women's 100 free as Kelly Stubbins won in 2:00.13 and Meagan Nay earned second in 2:00.77. Ashley Chandler of California took third in 2:01.52.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Lethal Leisel Jones won another showdown with American Tara Kirk, this time 1:07.27 to 1:07.62 in the women's 100 breast (both times stand in the top five in the world this year). Sarah Katsoulis of Australia wound up third in 1:09.00.

Men's 400 IM
Australia's Nicholas Cordner hit the wall in 4:26.95 to lead an Aussie 1-3 in the event. Teammate Stephen Parkes placed third in 4:30.29, while Japan's Yuma Kosaka split the difference in 4:29.33.

Women's 100 butterfly
Stanford's Elaine Breeden went sub-1:00 to claim the event title in 59.91. Australia completed the rest of the top three as Danni Miatke clocked a second-place 1:00.92 and Alicia Coutts placed third in 1:01.50.

Men's 100 backstroke
Stanford went 1-3-4 in the event as Peter Marshall won in 55.89, Hongzhe Sun took third in 56.57 and Jason Dunford touched in 58.60 for fourth. Australia's Daniel Arnamnart picked up second place in 56.17.

Men's 200 butterfly
Australia's Nick D'Arcy touched first in 1:58.52, while Japan's Takehisa Nakayama, 16, finished second in 2:00.94. D'Arcy's compatriot Christopher Wright pocketed third in 2:02.20.

Women's 200 IM
Japan's Izumi Kato dominated the field in 2:16.97, while Australia's Shayne Reese (2:19.05) and Emily Seebohm, 15, (2:19.81) took second and third place, respectively.

Men's 400 freestyle
Australia's Nic Donald (3:56.15) held off Stanford's Andy Grant (3:57.67) for the title, while Joe Kinderwater of the United States placed third in 4:07.22.

Women's 50 freestyle
Rising Australian sprint phenom Cate Campbell, 15, clocked a 25.57 to nip California's Emily Silver (25.76) for the crown. Campbell's countrywoman Danni Miatke took third in 26.21.

Men's 200 breaststroke
Australia crushed the competition in the men's 200 breast with a 1-2-3-4 effort. Brenton Rickard won in 2:14.98, while Robert McDonald (2:18.04), James Stacey (2:18.28) and Luke Trickett (2:19.36) comprised the rest of the top four.

Women's 200 backstroke
Australia's Meagen Nay clocked a 2:11.25, which stands in the top 10 in the world this year, to win the women's 200 back. Japan's Tomoyo Fukuda finished second in 2:12.14, which is a top 20 time, while Stanford's Julia Smit touched in 2:14.83 for third place.

Women's 800 freestyle
Japan's Tomoe Ono led a 17-year-old top three with a time of 8:39.23. Australia's Lorren Sellwood touched in 8:44.89 for second, while Japan's Kanako Miyabe placed third in 8:45.23.
