Title IX Violation Complaint Filed Against Ohio University -- April 6, 2007
ATHENS, Ohio, April 6. ACCORDING to the Athens News, a complaint has been filed against Ohio University with the Office of Civil Rights of the United States Department of Education claiming that the school violated Title IX when it decided to eliminate the men's swimming and diving program. The complaint was filed March 13.
Jim Bradshaw, a spokesman for the Department of Education, indicated that it takes roughly a month to determine whether a complaint warrants an investigation. If an investigation is called for, six months is a normal timeframe for the case to be resolved. Title IX is the federal law that is designed to prevent discrimination based on sex for programs that get financial assistance from the federal government.
The cutting of men's swimming and diving at Ohio University continued a disturbing trend in collegiate athletics. Many schools have slashed swimming and wrestling, among other sports, as a way to save money or to make their athletic participation numbers between male and female athletes reflect the makeup of the student body.
