Kenyon Opens Division III Championships With First-Day Lead

HOUSTON, Texas, March 15. Kenyon College started off its potential 28th-straight title with a first-day lead by accumulating 154 points at the men's NCAA Division III Championship held in Houston, Texas.

Emory holds second with 125 points, while Denison (110), Johns Hopkins (82) and Gustavus Adolphus (80) comprised the rest of the top five.

200 freestyle relay
Kenyon opened up the evening with a win as the quartet of Blair Withington, Joshua Mitchell, Matthew Harris and Marc Christian touched out Washington & Lee's team of Tim McGlaston, Mike Ginder, David Croushore and Alex Sweet, 1:21.54 to 1:21.64.

Denison's squad of David Curtis, Lowell Byers, Jon Behnke and John Geissinger rounded out the top three in 1:22.04.

500 freestyle
Kenyon picked up another victory as Eric Dunn touched first in 4:25.62, while Denison's David Curtis finished just behind in 4:25.74. Gustavus' Matt Stewart grabbed third in 4:29.08.

200 IM
St. Olaf's Nelson Westby won the third straight tight race with a time of 1:50.84 against Emory's Scott Bobo's 1:50.89. Kenyon's Joseph Gosselar took third in 1:51.69.

50 freestyle
Grove City went 1-2 as Tim Whitbeck (20.25) and Caleb Courage (20.32) claimed first and second, respectively. Kenyon's Joshua Mitchell garnered third in 20.36.

One-Meter Diving
Occidental gave DIII its second straight top-two sweep as Jon Dohring (457.45) and Robert Dohring (453.70) finished first and second. Meanwhile, RPI's Greg Derevianko finished third with 448.55 points.

400 medley relay
Johns Hopkins' team of John Thomas, Matthew Fedderly, Bob Sershon and Brad Test won in 3:20.21, while Denison's foursome of Adam Ulrich, Bryce Peterson, Lowell Byers and John Geissinger took second in 3:21.59. Emory's squad of Thomas Roos, Scott Bobo, John Petroff and Andrew Callam rounded out the top three in 3:22.16.
