Kenyon College Claims 21st National Title; Pair of Division III Records Fall at NCAAs

HOUSTON, Texas, March 10. IN the final day of competition at the women's Division III NCAA Championships held in Houston, Texas, Kenyon College claimed its 21st national team title with a 538-point tally.

Amherst finished a distant second with 320 points, while Emory took third with 295 points. Calvin (283) and Denison (267) comprised the rest of the top five.

Meanwhile, Amherst's Brittany Sasser demolished her 200 back national record, while Tufts' Kendall Swett broke her three-meter diving standard. Both record-setting performances occurred during prelims.

1650 freestyle
Kenyon went 1-2 in the distance free as Jaime Straub won in 17:00.08, while teammate Rebecca Allison took second in 17:04.55. Wheaton's Katlin Marko placed third in 17:08.94.

200 backstroke
Amherst's Brittany Sasser crushed her DIII record with a 1:57.55 in prelims. She then came back to win the event in 1:59.15. The previous standard of 1:59.87 was set on March 11, 2006.

Kenyon's Carolyn Barer finished second in 2:02.04, while Williams' Amanda Nicholson took third in 2:02.71.

100 freestyle
SUNY-New Paltz' Michelle Coombs finished her career with a 100 free title in 50.84, while Kenyon's Tina Ertel placed second in 51.04. Calvin's Becky Weima rounded out the top three in 51.16.

200 breaststroke
Washington and Jefferson's Kaitlyn Orstein cruised to victory in the 200 breast with a time of 2:17.36, while Springfield's Moira Price touched second in 2:19.37. UC Santa Cruz' Erin Hunter finished just behind for third in 2:19.44.

200 butterfly
Middlebury's Marika Ross hit the wall first in 2:02.26, while Emory's Leigh Psaris (2:02.71) and Whitworth's Samantha Kephart (2:03.06) picked up second and third, respectively.

Three-Meter Diving
MIT's Doria Holbrook won the event with a 480.90-point tally, while Calvin's Erica Deur (476.10) and Lake Forest's Maggie Rezac (473.70) took second and third.

Notably, Tufts' Kendall Swett broke her DIII record in prelims with a tally of 493.20, but settled for fourth with 456.05 points in finals.

400 freestyle relay
Kenyon's team of Tina Ertel, Elizabeth Carlton, Alyssa Toran and Jessica Wise won in 3:26.25, while Emory's Ruth Westby, Sarah Nicholson, Jamie Lawler and Leigh Psaris placed second in 3:26.98.
