Tanner, Winter Crush Kansas State High School Marks

By Brian Savard

TOPEKA, Kansas, March 16. SHAWNEE Mission East, despite taking third in the last relay at the Kansas State High School Championship, held on to a seven-point lead at the meet's end and therefore earned itself a state championship.

Shawnee Mission East tallied 299 points while second-place finisher O.P.-Blue Valley North compiled 292 points. Olathe East placed third with 250 points.

Senior Luke Tanner led the way for Shawnee Mission-East. Tanner broke the 200 freestyle state record with a 1:39.50 time. Tyler Schmidt from Topeka set the former standard of 1:40.54 back in 2004. Tanner outdid his 2006 performance in the 100 freestyle, and by doing so, he reset his own record. Tanner's preliminary time of 45.30 eclipsed his state-record preliminary swim from 2006 (45.77).

David Winter from Newton matched Tanner's two records by setting two of his own. Winter touched the wall in a scorching 1:49.50 in the 200 IM. Winter's swim eclipsed the former Kansas state mark of 1:52.06 set by O.P.-Blue Valley Northwest's Chris Bundy back in 1995. In the 100 butterfly, Winter demolished the field en route to a state-record time of 48.58. Jonathan Schmidt of Topeka set the former 100 butterfly standard in 2002 with a 50.26 time.

Shawnee Mission Northwest's Daniel Beattie edged out O.P.-Blue Valley Northwest's Andy Krantz in the diving competition 433.49-431.02. Olathe North's Aryan Long placed third with 414.25 points.
