San Diego Masters Swimmer Bill Muter Passes Away -- March 1, 2007
SAN DIEGO, California, March 1. SHORTLY after a swim workout on Feb. 23, former U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and 15-year veteran of Masters swimming Bill Muter, 65, passed away due to an apparent cardiac arrest.
According to club sources, Muter finished his work out and said he was not feeling well. He then collapsed and could not be revived. He also had shown signs of heart problems over the past few months.
Muter has made it into the pages of Swimming World Magazine, most recently in an October 2005 feature "Winning at Any Age."
"Winning means exactly the same to me now as when I was younger," Muter said in that article. "It's about preparation and participation. If you've done the work and prepared yourself as best you can under your particular life situation, you're a winner. If you can still put on a suit and swim, you have won."
A former marine, Muter received a Silver Star for bravery in combat in 1968 as a member of the Delta Company 3rd Recon Battalion.
