UC Davis Men, UC Santa Barbara Women Share Lead on Day Two of Big West Championships

IRVINE, California, February 22. THREE more records fell on day two of the 2007 Big West Swimming and Diving Championships, highlighted by the UC Irvine men posting a time of 3:11.52 in the 400 medley relay, which shattered the old mark by more than four seconds. Despite UCI winning four of the five men's events, UC Davis leads with a total of 319 points. UC Santa Barbara is in the lead on the women's side with 310.5 points.

UC Irvine freshman Lyndsay Depaul broke an eight-year old record in the women's 200 IM and registered an NCAA automatic qualifying time with a mark of 2:00.39. Her effort nipped the old record held by Nevada's Limin Liu (2000) by three-tenths of a second.

The Anteaters made it a clean sweep in the 200 IM as junior Randall Tom swam a 1:47.01 to barely miss breaking Krzysztof Zoldak's record of 1:46.84. His win got the Anteaters on a roll as senior Eric Reilly followed with a win in the 50 free (20.22). UCI punctuated the evening with its rousing victory in the 400 medley relay.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Anteaters earned another first place plaque when freshman Eric Nugent won the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 225.55.

UC Davis managed to maintain its lead from day one, aided by the effort of Scott Weltz. The sophomore cruised to his second victory in this year's championship, winning the 500 free (4:24.78) by three seconds over teammate Alex Aribios.

The UC Irvine men sit in second place with 267.5 points and UC Santa Barbara is third with 229.5. Pacific is fourth (229), Cal Poly fifth (139) and Cal State Northridge rounds out the standings with 132 points.

UC Santa Barbara won three out of the four events on the women's side to wrest the lead away from Pacific. The Gauchos have a two-day total of 310.5 points, while the Tigers are within striking distance with a 272 total. UC Irvine has 188 points for third place. UC Davis (138), Cal State Northridge (130) and Cal Poly (125.5) round out the women's standings.

Another freshman delivered a record-setting performance when UCSB's Anne Marie May raced to a 22.61 win in the 50 free. May broke the old mark of 22.72 held by Nevada's Jia Lin Sun (2000). May also posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark with the win.

UCSB got things started in the 500 free with sophomore Liz Wagner earning a win in a time of 4:53.81. The Gauchos finished the way they started, as the 400 medley relay team edged Pacific in the closest race of the evening. UCSB recorded a 3:44.27 to beat the Tigers by two-tenths of a second.

Day three from Belmont Plaza in Long Beach begins with preliminary action at 11:00 a.m. Friday nightÕs finals commence at 6:00 p.m.
