Huegill Ready for Retirement -- February 17, 2007
SYDNEY, Australia, February 17. AUSTRALIAN Geoff Huegill, following in the path of countryman Ian Thorpe, has decided to retire. The official announcement will come tomorrow. Huegill admitted to the Daily Telegraph that he has been contemplating retirement for years and is now ready to make the career-ending decision.
Huegill indicated that he was somewhat influenced by the decision of Thorpe to walk away from the pool. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Huegill earned a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly and was on the silver-medal winning 400 medley relay. He also formerly held the world record in the 50 fly and won a world title in that event in 2001.
"I spoke to Thorpey and I congratulated him on the decision that he made,'' Huegill said. "I thought that was a great move. It helped me think about my own priorities. I had a good break and went overseas with my girlfriend. I did a lot of thinking about life and what I wanted to do. I just thought the time was right to do it as well.''
