Reigning Champs Gardner-Webb Leads With 217 Points After Day One of Northeast Conference Championships -- February 16, 2007

LANDOVER, Maryland, February 16. GARNDER-Webb won both relays and a pair of individual events on day one of the three-day 2007 NEC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Lady Bulldogs dominated from the get-go, dominating the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay. The team consisting of Terra Wilson (Potter Valley, CA/Deep Valley Christian), Kathryn Williams (Greenville,SC/Eastside), Kelly Gueltig (Miamisburg, OH/Ridgeville Christian) and Corey Hughley (Auburn, AL/Auburn) finished in a conference-record time of 1:34.93. Georgia Southern's squad of Katelyn Woolfolk (Satellite Beach, FL/Satellite), Jennifer Clayton (Jasper, GA/Carlton J. Kell), Amanda Gerdeman (Jacksonville, FL/Mandarin) and Courtney Martz (Woodbine, GA/Camden County) finished second in 1:36.50. Wagner, Central Connecticut State and Howard University finished four-tenths apart, finishing third, fourth and fifth in 1:37.50, 1:37.70 and 1:37.91, respectively.

In a race that went back and forth for all 20 laps, Central Connecticut State's Kristen Jurzynski (Seymour, CT/Holy Cross) kicked it in during the last 15 yards to beat top-ranked Heather Roka (Ft. Myers, FL/ Ft. Myers) from Gardner-Webb. Jurzynski finished first in 4:58.13 and Roka clocked in at 4:59.42. Wagner's Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) finished with the bronze in a time of 5:00.58.

Coming off a record-breaking performance from prelims in the morning, Gardner-Webb's Wilson beat her own record, claiming the gold in the 200 IM in 2:02.35, a new conference record and an NCAA "B" cut. Central Connecticut State's tandum of Lindsey Snyder (Winterport, ME/Bangor) and Rachel Brookman (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) finished second and third, respectively, with times of 2:08.39 and 2:09.35.

Only nine-tenths of a second separated the first-place finisher from eight-place in the 50 freestyle. Williams of Gardner-Webb brought home the second individual title for the Bulldogs in 24.05. Georgia Southern's Martz came in second in 24.25 and Williams' teammate Hughey finished third in 24.34.

Gardner-Webb picked up its second relay victory, winning the 400 medley relay in 3:54.11. Central Connecticut State came in second at 3:57.31 and Wagner clocked in at 3:59.42 to seal the bronze medal.

On the one-meter board, the Blue Devils claimed first and second place as sophomore Kristen Rossi (Southington, CT/Southington) won the event for the second consecutive year with a score of 193.70. Liz Wahlberg's (Manchester, CT/Manchester) score of 188.50 was good for second and Georgia Southern's Nicole Hutchison (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) came in third with a score of 183.35.
