Notre Dame Women Maintain Lead, West Virginia Men Jump Ahead at Big East Championships

EAST MEADOW, New York, February 15. AT the conclusion of Day 2 of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships, the Notre Dame Women lead the pack with 246 points while the West Virginia University Men's team has earned 273 points to place them in first place.

The 500 Freestyle kicked off Thursday evening's BIG EAST Championship events. Katie Carroll of Notre Dame captured the first title of the night with a time of 4:45.50. Jenny Somerville of Villanova finished second at 4:47.79 followed by Kristin Brown of Pittsburgh who hit the wall at 4:48.84.

The West Virginia men continued winning as Zoltan Povazsai placed first with a time of 4:22.97. Notre Dame's Ted Brown finished second with 4:26.13 with Alex Taraskin of Syracuse finishing third at 4:26.76.

Ashlee Edgell of Notre Dame earned the BIG EAST title in the women's 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:02.08. Louisville's Leslie Vanwinkle finished second at 2:02.36 followed by Kitti Veisz of West Virginia coming in at 2:02.90.

The men followed as Louisville captured its first title of the meet as Vali Preda came in first at 1:47.90. Finishing second and third, West Virginia teammates Pablo Marmolejo touched the wall at 1:48.07 followed by Sean Mahoney at 1:49.02.

The 50 Yard Freestyle crown was captured by Rutgers' Madison Kennedy who set a new BIG EAST record with a time of 22.45. West Virginia's Kayla Andrews finished second coming in 22.81 followed by Notre Dame's Rebecca Grove who recorded a time of 23:03.

Andrew Langenfeld of West Virginia earned the men's 50 Yard Freestyle title with a time of 20:28. Josh Schneider of Cincinnati hit the wall at 20:31 followed by Mountaineer Nick Delic placing him third with a time of 20:32.

The women's 1 Meter Diving title belonged to Alida Di Placeido of Syracuse who earned a final score of 283.00. Connecticut's Liza Marianni place second with 256.35 points followed by Natalie Stitt of Notre Dame who earned a score of 246.50, who rounded out the top 3.

The 200 Freestyle Relay concluded Thursday's finals as the women of Notre Dame finished on top as Caroline Johnson, Christa Riggins, Katie Carroll and Rebecca Grove earned the title with a 1:31.85 time. West Virginia's foursome of Kitti Veisz, Rachel Fedyk, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews finished just four tenths of a second behind the Irish at 1:31.89. Rutgers relay team consisting of Alex Allen, Kasey Kesses, Ashley Dunphy and Madison Kennedy hit the wall at 1:31.99, placing them third.

Andrew Langenfeld, Zoltan Povazsai, Ivan Tolic and Nick Delic of West Virginia claimed the BIG EAST crown with a time of 1:18.89. Notre Dame's foursome of John Lytle, Tim Kegelman, Louis Cavadini and Andrew Hoffman finished second at the 1:21.35 mark. Following the Irish, Cincinnati finished third with a time of 1:21 earned by Marcel Kleiner, Josh Schneider, Stephen Wood and Steve Marshall.

The fourth session of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships will consist of the men's and women's 400 Individual Medley, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke and 400 Medley Relay. The men will compete for the 3 Meter Diving crown.

Preliminaries will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the finals which will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Results will be posted on the BIG EAST Website, www.bigeast.org after each session while Live Video Streaming of each event will be available through the BIG EAST Championship Central Page. Up-to-the minute results will be available on www.sportstiming.com.
