Geneseo Men, Oswego Women Take Home SUNYAC Championship Titles

BUFFALO, New York, February 10. THE Geneseo men's swimming and diving team won their ninth consecutive SUNYAC championship at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. tonight as Geneseo captured the final event, the 400 free relay to defeat Cortland, 727.5-718. Oswego held on to its two-day lead to take home the women's title with 838 points.

The relay of Sig Culhane, Kevin VanDerMeid, Charlie Hake and John Zolna swam to a meet clinching time of 3:09.10. In other action on Saturday, senior James Kallio won the 200 breast in a time of 2:07.05, senior Phil Szrama was second in the 200 back in 1:57.08 and senior Chris Norton was third in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:59.05.

The Blue Wave finished in fourth through ninth place in the 100 freestyle to gain valuable points. On Friday, the Blue Wave captured two individual titles and one winning relay. Kallio won the 100 breast in an NCAA provisional time of 57.63 and Szrama won the 100 back in 53.77. The 200 medley relay team of Szrama, Kallio, Hake and Zolna won in a time of 1:35.31.

In addition, Norton was second in the 100 fly in 52.97 and Culhane was third in the 200 free in 1:45.70. On Thursday, Geneseo won the 200 free and 400 medley relays with VanDerMeid, Culhane, Hake and Zolna crossing in 1:25.00 in the former and Szrama, Kallio, Norton and Zolna racing to a 3:29.99 in the latter. Individually, Hake won the 50 free in a blistering 21.04 and Zolna was third in the event in 21.44. Other top finishers included Kallio's second place in the 200 IM (1:57.84) and Culhane's third place in the 500 free in 4:52.68.

The women's swimming and diving team finished third in team standings with 641.5 points behind Cortland's 656 and Oswego's winning 838 at the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving championships at the Flickinger Aquatics Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

In Saturday's final day, Geneseo saw Jessie Cocco win the 200 breast in a time of 2:28.99, while the trio of Lindsay Dressel, K.C. Monahan and Lindsey Fial finished 3-4-5 in the 200 fly in 2:12.18, 2:12.65 and 2:13.01, respectively. In addition, Justine Diaz placed second in the 1650 freestyle in 17:53.28 and Amanda Cavarella was third in the same event in 18:02.51.

On Friday, Geneseo swept the top three places in the 400 IM as Dressel touched in 4:37.36, Fial finished in 4:40.58 and Natalie Thorpe swam a 4:42.56. Cocco won the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.15 and Monahan was second in the 200 free in 1:57.70. On Thursday, Monahan upset defending champion Lindsay Simrell in the 500 freestyle by posting a winning time of 5:10.81, just .64 off the conference record held by Geneseo's Erin Walsh '05. Dressel and Fial placed 1-2 in the 200 IM with times of 2:11.44 and 2:12.23.
