Harvard Men Swim by Brown, 179-116

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, January 27. HARVARD cruised to a 179-116 win against Brown Friday at the Smith Swim Center. Junior Sam Wollner was a winner in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 400 individual medley.

Harvard built a sizable early lead in the meet was never challenged as the Crimson claimed the first-place points in 12 of the 16 events. The Crimson had the top two finishers in five events, and claimed the top three places in four in improving to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League. Brown fell to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the EISL.

The Crimson opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay, with the winning quartet touching the wall in 3:29.59.

Harvard extended its lead to 31-4 after just two events when Wollner led a 1-2-3 Crimson finish in the 1,000. Wollner finished in 9:21.67, while Eric Lynch (9:29.42) and Alex Meyer (9:34.33) were not far off the pace.

Brown picked up its first win in the 200 freestyle, but the Crimson answered with victories by Jason Degan-Rojeski and Geoff Rathgeber in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively, to give Harvard a 52-20 lead through five events.

The Bears claimed the 200 butterfly, but Harvard answered with wins in the next seven events, sparked by Bill Jones's effort in the 50 freestyle.

Lucas Sanders followed by claiming the first-place points in one-meter diving, and David Guernsey took the 100 freestyle. Michael Bowen and Tim Parent won the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively, before Meyer led a 1-2-3 Crimson showing in the 500 freestyle.

Dan Jones led Harvard to the top four places in the 100 butterfly, and Wollner completed his double by leading a 1-2-3-4 Crimson finish in the 400 IM (4:06.66).

Harvard completes the dual meet portion of its schedule Feb. 3-4, when the Crimson faces Yale and Princeton at the Tigers' DeNunzio Pool.
