IUPUI Men Record 4-2 Record at Quad Meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, January 21. THE IUPUI men's swimming and diving team took home 25 podium finishes as the Jaguars went 4-2 over a two-day, four-team dual meet at the IU Natatorium. Senior Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) had five podium finishes over the two-day event, while sophomore Jaron Tuttle (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka) took first place in all four diving events.
Wheeler needs just three more podium finishes to equal the school record, set in 2002 by Brian Helton.

The men went 2-1 in both sessions, recording 12 podium finishes on Saturday morning. Wheeler set two team season-bests in the morning, posting a time of 4:20.63 in the 400 IM while finishing third. In the 200 butterfly, Wheeler touched the wall in 2:00.09, good for a second-place finish and a season best.

Tuttle swept first place off of the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, posting a score of 291.00 off of the 1-meter and a 326.85 on the 3-meter. Fellow divers junior Josh Riedy (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and freshman Josh Davis (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) were second and third, respectively in both diving events.

Freshman Justin Shaw (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland) finished with two podium results in the morning session, placing third in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. Shaw had a time of 49.53 in the 100 and a 1:50.75 in the 200.

On Friday night, Tuttle took home first place finishes in both diving events, posting a score of 326.103 in the 1-meter diving, the fourth-best score in school history. Tuttle followed that up with a score of 303.53 off of the 3-meter board, narrowly missing another top-15 all-time place.
Wheeler added to his school record podium finishes as well, recording three to his record Friday evening. The senior set personal bests in the 1000 freestyle (10:10.31) and the 100 butterfly (54.05) while placing third in each event- both times were also men's team bests. In the 500 freestyle, Wheeler came in second place with a time of 4:55.54.

In the diving events Friday night, the IUPUI men swept the podium in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, with Tuttle leading the way. Riedy came in second in both events, turning in a personal-best score of 285.83 off of the 1-meter board and and 288.00 on the 3-meter board.
Davis took third in both diving events with scores of 274.50 in the 1-meter and 259.28 in the 3-meter.

Sophomore Richard Dailey (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Shaw were the only other individuals to finish on the podium. Dailey took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.52, while Shaw was third in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 22.58.

Both relay teams finished third Friday night, with the 200 medley relay team of Dailey, freshman Craig Noakes (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte), senior Chris Hutchison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) and Shaw posting a time of 1:39.64. In the 200 freestyle relay, Dailey, senior Jeddah Wegerhoff (Avon, Ind./Avon), sophomore Eric Hollingsworth (Avon, Ind./Avon) and freshman Steven Zoss (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) combined for a time of 1:30.53.

The IUPUI men defeated Butler, 77-36, and Mid-Con foe South Dakota State, 69-44, before falling to St. Louis University, 74-39, Friday night. On Saturday, the men knocked off Butler, 77-27, South Dakota State, 68-36, and fell to St. Louis, 72-32.

IUPUI returns to the pool Thursday, January 25, when they will host Eastern Illinois in a dual meet. The action at the IU Natatorium begins at 6:30 p.m.
