Nebraska Edges Out Iowa State, 153-145

AMES, Iowa, January 21. THE Iowa State swimming and diving team started strong by taking first place honors in four of the first five events but couldn't hold off the Nebraska Cornhuskers as the Cyclones' record fell to 5-3 on the year in dual meets after suffering a 153-145 loss on Senior Day in Beyer Hall Pool.

Iowa State claimed an early lead, but Nebraska battled back to tie up the score at 93 points a piece through the tenth event and eventually took the lead for good after a first and second place finish in the 500 free.

For the Cyclones, Lauren Breunig continued her dominance as she swam to three victories for the second meet in a row. Breunig won the 200 free (1:53.06), the 100 free (52.12) and the 200 IM (2:06.61). She also helped her 200 medley relay team to a second place finish with a time of 1:48.63 in her last meet at Beyer Hall Pool.

The Cyclones also got two first place finishes from junior Krista Fehl. The Sturgeon Bay, Wis., native won the 100 breast (1:05.84) and 200 breast (2:26.32). She also teamed up with Breunig on the second place 200 medley relay team.

Sophomore Lindsay Wegner provided Iowa State with an outstanding performance as well. Wegner swam to a lifetime best in the 100 back as she touched the wall first with a time of 58.72. She was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:48.25). Wegner finished third in the 200 back (2:08.95) and 100 fly (59.34).

"Today's meet goes to show how close these two teams really are," head Coach Duane Sorenson commented. "We tied with Nebraska at the Big 12 Relays and were just a couple of tenths away from winning the dual today. Overall, I'm very happy with our performance."

Iowa State received strong performances on the boards from freshman Tien Tran and sophomore Kali Fryklund.

Tran took second place in the 3-meter event with a point total of 265.95. She also captured a third place finish in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 241.20.

Fryklund, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn., posted a season best in the 3-meter with a score of 245.47 as she placed fourth. In the 1-meter event, Fryklund came in fifth with 209.54 points.

"We didn't have our best effort of the year on the 1-meter," head diving Coach Jeff Warrick said. "But I was very proud of the way all the women bounced back on the 3-meter event."

The Cyclones next match-up is against Kansas as the Cyclones take to the road for back-to-back meets next Friday and Saturday against the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan. Friday's dual meet is scheduled for 6 p.m., with Saturday's events beginning at 10 a.m. Results for both days will be made available on www.cyclones.com.
